Encouraging A Child To Like Writing
Posted on Dec 15, 2009 under ashley, education, rant | 23 CommentsAshley doesn’t like writing and her handwriting is pretty atrocious
Each time when we ask her to do her writing, she’ll whine and even said she doesn’t like to do it. When it comes to reading, she’s fine and loves reading her books. I asked her teacher about this matter and she said Ashley loves to do homework and writing in school. Strange indeed. I didn’t really pay much attention to her writing this whole year until the school holiday started. In order to keep her occupied, I got her some exercise books for her to do writing at home. Oh my, I was shocked to see her handwriting. There are also many alphabets in small letters which she does not know how to write
So everyday, I sit with her for 15 minutes to guide her and let her write the same alphabet a few times a week. There are many *hair-pulling* incidents while coaching her
I praise her when she writes nicely and gives her lots of encouragement. Her writings are getting better now with lots of practice. I really must have the patience to sit down and guide her with her work. Do your kids dislike writing? Just how do you encourage him/her to like writing?

same here.to keep her still and not jump abt around the house, I coax her to do ‘koong ker’ (ie homework). start with writing then coloring but she cannot follow instuction lah.. hard to get her to ‘follow the dots’, after writing one miserable ‘A’, she scribbles the whole page.. driving me up the wall, a while later, I tapau everything.. to keep myself sane ! kek sei mou ?

I think she is doing great. Reading is more important than writing…that was what I’ve been told.
Gwen doesn’t know how to write like Ashley..I mean without the dotted lines..hehe.
I think all kids like to be praised. Just give her alot of praises maybe this will motivate her more.

Or maybe some rewards. If she has completed certain tasks, reward her with some star stickers or something..hehe.

my boys also don’t like writting. Now school holidays, sometime i still ask them to do some Math and some writting (if i’m not too lazy) hahahhaha.
Usually i will rewards them for some “sweets” if they finish the writting and they do good. (bad hor?)

i too need advice on how to get avery to do her homework and expedite the process. since avery likes to be praised, i’ll encourage her to write nicely so that she would receive a ’star’ from her teacher. it works most of the time

But then I thought I only started writing when I was 6 in kindergarten… so I “fong go hui” lo…

its really a not so nice time (most of the time) when it comes to homework time for shan leo. he will give lots of excuses to delay it, or whine and complain that why he has to do homework, etc
i just hope shan leo will realised that all these is for his own good next time
