a lil surprise

Posted on Feb 29, 2012 under ashley, being a mom, education | 10 Comments

Hey everyone.  Many thanks for your comments, feedback and advice on my previous post.  Eventhough I don’t like the method being used to discipline the children in the school, I guess I have to accept it as long as Ashley is attending a Chinese school.  I hope Ashley will learn to accept this too. She seemed okay after school today.  Oh, she also brought back a form which at first I thought was for extra classes in school or a flyer on yoga certification course.

It is actually for the RM100 cash handouts for students in Malaysia, given by the government.  Many have already received the monies at the end of last year or beginning of this year.  I thought there won’t be any for Year 1 pupils and we would have to wait till next year.  I am quite surprised to see the form :)   Has anyone with Year 1 children collected the cash already?  Is this a one-off thing?

ting xie

Posted on Feb 28, 2012 under ashley, being a mom, education | 39 Comments

Ashley’s teacher gave the students a few chinese words to write as homework yesterday.  Then today, the kids have to do ting xie (Chinese spelling) on those words they did yesterday.

SAM_2568

Ashley has 2 mistakes and she left 2 spaces blank because she doesn’t know how to write the words.

She came home and told me that her teacher smacked her hand twice with a ruler because she did not study at home, hence the mistakes.  The teacher also threw her book on the floor.  She did the same thing to a few of them who made mistakes :(   Then Ashley took a paper and drew a picture of her teacher.

SAM_2566

She used a ruler and smack the drawing *shake head*.  I told her that she cannot do that and she said it’s pretend play.  She said her teacher didn’t do her homework so she smacked her *sigh*

I am not against punishment in school especially when the children misbehaved but physical punishment when the children do not know how to do their work is not right.  This will instil fear in the kids, especially those who have just started going to a big school.  Ashley has been saying that she doesn’t want to go to school because her teacher is fierce :(

Is physical force the only method to punish children in school?  Discipline isn’t about punishment. It is about teaching and guidance.

take them to …………..

We have never heard of Candylicious before until my dad told Ashley about it.  Candylicious is the world’s largest candy store and it carries over 5000 kinds of candies and chocolates.  The store is like heaven filled with candies.   Not a place to go if you are on a diet!  The whole store was very brightly lit and I wonder if they used fx luminaire lighting.  There is one in KLCC (opened in November) and a new one opened in One Utama recently.  My dad has a sweet tooth and needless to say, he was very eager to bring Ashley there.  They finally set a date and it was last Friday after school.

I can only take the photos from the outside.  No camera is allowed inside the store because the candies are shy :)

The bag of CaramelCrisp popcorn.  This gourmet popcorn is darn expensive if you asked me but they are good :)

Since the visit to Candylicious was before dinner time, the missy was not allowed to have any ice-cream or candies.  She conned told her gong gong that she would love to have this fluffy Destiny Duck which she named “Ducky Mo Mo“.  I foresee there will be many more trips to Candylicious with gong gong.

her 2nd time

A few days ago, a dear friend asked me if I am interested in getting Ashley to do a photo shoot.  Her friend works in an advertising company and has a client who is looking for a girl to model their clothes.  Since the shooting does not clash with her school hours and the studio is near my office, we decided to let her do it.  This is the 2nd time for Ashley.  Her first stint as a model was when she’s 4 years old.  If you like, you can read about it here and here.  The first time was for The Garden’s Mother’s Day celebration.

The shooting session started at about 9.30am today and ended at 11am.  Pretty fast eh?  Ashley was given about 6 outfits to wear and she did various poses.  I was surprised to see the way she posed for the camera.  It was pretty natural for her…hehehehe.  The photographer and his team commented that it was easy to photograph the missy.  I only managed to take a few photos below before the start of the photography session.

funny things at the mall

This is a backdated post.  During Chinese New Year holidays, we went to The Curve for some retail therapy.   Do you know what caught my eye there?

SAM_2509-1

Have you seen a dressed-up camel before?  I feel so sorry for the poor creature.  Why on earth would they want to put this kind of decor on a camel statue?

SAM_2508

Even the poor cow from Marche was not spared.  I wonder what’s next?  Get them to wear hjc helmets?  Perhaps they should just stick to decorating the mall during festive season and leave these animal statues alone :)

Japanese Washi Tapes In KL

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 under crafts | 13 Comments

We were in Bangsar Village recently and I chanced upon this cute shop called Sundays.  At first I thought it was a shop selling home decor stuff.  When I went into the shop, I discovered that it is actually a shop with bits of everything.  You can find furniture, kitchen ware, hanging address plaques, candles, soaps and other knick-knacks.   What caught my eyes are the Japanese Washi Tapes which are also known as Japanese Masking Tapes.  I have seen these tapes from online stores in the US or Etsy but I didn’t know they are available here in KL.  You all know how much I love to wrap gifts eh?  More so using brown kraft paper.  Japanese Washi Tapes are great for decorating the gifts wrapped in brown kraft paper.

Here’s what I got – RM10 for the plain one and RM13 for the other.  Pretty pricey huh?

I have been using the tapes which I bought from Daiso and Mr. DIY to decorate the gift bags.  Below are some of creations I did.

Can’t wait to use my new tapes.  So if you are looking for Japanese Washi Tapes, just swing by Sundays at BV. (fyi, Sundays didn’t ask me to blog about them)

the girl who loves dogs

Ashley is very fond of dogs.  She has been asking us to get her a dog as a pet :)   Of course we told her that she can have a dog but that would have to wait a little longer.  No price for guessing who is going to take care of the pet eh?  Anyway, shopaholic mommy cannot resist when she saw these ….

Investing In Penny Stocks

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 under business, finance | No Comment

Recently a friend told me that he is investing in penny stocks.  Since I am unfamiliar with this, he explained that penny stocks are actually any shares trading for $5 each or less.  It is pretty exciting to trade penny stocks.  However, many people are not very keen in this investment because they have a bad name.  Buying shares at bargain prices are pretty volatile and they carry a lot more risk than the average investment.  Many investors lose money trading them.  Having said that, there are shares of some companies that have gone from a few cents to $20.  This shows that there is great reward potential where penny stocks are concerned.  Some stocks  are trading at a few pennies per share because they are just getting started.  Investors just need to understand that dangers and learn how to find good quality companies that will pay off for years to come.  Some of these shares go from unknown to world-famous companies and when that happens, they take their investors along for the ride.

To assist you in getting high quality shares that can multiply your investment, Tim Sykes is the person you should meet.  Timothy Sykes is a best-selling author, ex-hedge fund manager and a self-made multi-millionaire trader.  He became a multi-millionaire at the age of 21 by trading penny stocks.  Tim Sykes has been featured on CNN, CNBC, ABC, The New York Times and many more.   In order to make informed and smart decisions, do contact Tim Sykes today.
