a very short trip

Posted on Apr 11, 2011 under family, food, good stuff | 20 Comments

We went back to Pomelosville yesterday for Qing Ming festival which is also known as All Souls’ Day or the Tombs Sweeping Festival.  It is a day trip for us to go back and pay our respects to hubs’ grandfather, father and sister.   First stop was Sam Poh Tong Temple.

Ashley posing at the entrance of the Sam Poh Tong temple.  It was packed with people because it’s the last weekend for everyone to pay their respects.  The whole place was filled with thick smoke due to the burning of joss sticks.

Right after Sam Poh Tong temple, we head over to the “Tai Shue Keok” aka Big Tree Foot in Pasir Pinji which is famous for its Yong Tau Foo.  I have blogged about this before.

I don’t like to eat there because of the hygiene factor (hubs always roll his eyes when I say that), so I just went down to buy some of our favourites – Sar Kok Liew (deep fried stuffed turnip) and stuffed fish paste with long beans.   Hubs wanted to have lunch at the popular Mee Kari Ipoh Garden along Jalan Pasir Puteh but sadly, it was closed yesterday.  Then when he turned to look at Chuan Fatt which is across the road, he decided to eat there because it wasn’t packed.  Chuan Fatt is also another good place for curries in Ipoh.  Hubs grew up eating there a lot as he used to stay nearby.

This is how the shop looks like.  It is on Jalan Pasir Puteh, just before the market.  Got this photo from gpsfoodfinder.blogspot.com.  What’s so special about the curries here?  Their sinfully delicious curry noodles (wet or dry) come with fried chicken, roasted pork or char siew.

We always order the dry curry version.  Yummylicious!

Ashley is having her ‘kon loh’ noodles with the sar kok liew we bought earlier.

We went back to KL after lunch.  It was a short but good trip as we got to eat our favourite food.  Brings back lots of memories :)   The address of Kedai Makanan Chuan Fatt is 294, Jalan Pasir Puteh, 31650 Ipoh, Perak.

Hubs went to Istanbul for business last week and came back yesterday.  Did he get us any gifts? You betcha!  He bought something nice for his Princess at a toy shop in the mall.

Hotel Puri, Melaka

Posted on Mar 16, 2011 under family, good stuff, travel | 20 Comments

This time around, we opt to stay in Hotel Puri, a lovely boutique hotel on Heeren Street (Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock)  which is just next to Jonker Street.  The 50-room hotel is a beautifully restored pre-war building. It has retained almost all its original fittings like the timber carvings, the mosaic floorings and etc.  I heart Hotel Puri.  The room is comfortable, pleasant and affordably priced too.

We walked past this Garden cafe on the way to our room.  It’s at the open courtyard.  Beautiful.

No price for guessing where we are going to stay when we go back to visit Malacca again ;)

Malacca Again

Posted on Mar 14, 2011 under ashley, family | 16 Comments

That’s where we went :)   Did I tell you that I love Malacca?  Just can’t get enough of this charming UNESCO World Heritage city which is only 1.5 hours away from KL.  What I love about Malacca is its quirky shops, guesthouses, art galleries, coffee houses and restaurants.  This trip of ours was really a short one.  Wish it was longer though.    Going to bore all of you with a few posts on what we did there….hehehhehehe.  First stop …

Hubs insisted that we visit the zoo this time around.  We didn’t tell Ashley that we were planning to go and she only knew about it just before we turned into the zoo.  Her remarks?  “Oh I am so happy today.  Thanks for taking me to the zoo:D

This zoo is huge and the animals are placed near one another so visitors need not walk very far to see them.

SAM_1076

Ashley is thrilled that we got to see the Orang Utan this time.  Sorry for the small pic.   That’s the closest I could get.  Here’s a mommy Orang Utan with her baby.

SAM_1075

Another one of her favourites – The Flamingoes because they are PINK!

SAM_1062

The little girl with her most trusted tool – The Map.  “Where are the giraffes mom?

SAM_1052

The highlight of the zoo trip – A ride on the horse.  The happy look on her face is priceless! Ashley insisted on going for the ride and I can’t believe my lil one is so brave.  She used to be scared of the Horse Carousel  :)   She was sad when the ride ended and we had to bid farewell to the horse.

After spending 2 hours at the 54-acre zoo, my legs started to feel numb from all the walking.  Though it’s good exercise, this is supposed to be a holiday and I wasn’t expecting this kind of ‘relaxation’.  Next up……Malacca city, what we ate and the beautiful place where we stayed.

happy friday

Eventhough it is only for a week, it is better than nothing eh?  We  have planned a short getaway…so see you all next week. Enjoy your weekend everyone …… however you plan to spend it :D

V-Day Dinner

Posted on Feb 16, 2011 under family, food | 19 Comments

We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, even during the courtship days.  You can tell how unromantic we are.  Hubs said it’s because we are Capricorns, who are known to be practical and prudent :D   I wanted to have steamboat after seeing a new restaurant in the flyer last week.  Therefore, we decided to give this new place a try.  Unfortunately, we had misplaced the flyer but hubs said he knew where this restaurant is. Off we went and after 30 mins, we still couldn’t find the restaurant.  So we gave up and went to another one.  Should have looked up the gps map as soon as we saw the flyer.  Anyway, we went to this place …..

I ordered the chicken soup base.

SAM_0998

This was my set.  It cost rm27.

I forgot to take a pic of hubs’ order.  He took the beef set which consist of a plate of 20 slices of beef, vege, mushrooms and tofu.  The steamboat was ok, nothing special about the food.  We were out for almost 2 hours and on the way back, the lil missy who was at home with her grandma, called me on the handphone.  She asked why we were still not back yet and why we were taking so long to have our dinner.  Doesn’t she sound like a mother-in-law?

a lil celebration

Thanks everyone for all the birthday wishes in Facebook and smses :) I really appreciate all the sweet wishes.   To celebrate my 30th birthday, we had steamboat dinner tonight.  It’s my favourite :) Yummy!

This photo was not taken by me.  I forgot the camera hence I googled it :)    We had a similar one – half soup and half tom yam *burp*

Did I get any pressies for my birthday? You betcha :)

SAM_0838

Coincidentally, Ashley’s Bahasa lesson in school today is about birthday and the children were required to draw a birthday card in the book. So, this is what she did today and showed it to me as soon as we picked her up from school :D   A birthday cake with lollipop flower and balloons.

books from my childhood

Posted on Jan 05, 2011 under ashley, being a mom, family, me | 24 Comments

While growing up, I read a lot of Enid Blyton’s books such as the Magic Faraway Tree, Wishing Chair, Hello Mr. Twiddle and etc.  These books were such a delight and I read them over and over again.  I wished that I could join the children in the Enchanted Forest :D

book

Then I progressed to the Famous Five and the Secret Seven. Love the mysteries.  As I got a little older, I read books like Little Women, Little House on the Prairie, Tom Sawyer and Anne of Green Gables.

I can’t wait for Ashley to start reading these books and hope that she would love them as much as I do. What were your favourite books as a child?

what she wants for Christmas

Posted on Dec 20, 2010 under ashley, family, funny, gift | 14 Comments

We don’t celebrate Christmas but hubs want to get Ashley something during the holiday season.  This is because he said when he was a kid, he always wish for a present during Christmas but never gotten any.   So, one day he casually asked her.

Hubs :  “What do you want for Christmas, Ashley?”

Ashley :  “Hmm…..I want a basketball daddy

Hubs:  *SurprisedA basketball?  Why do you want a basketball?

Ashley :  ” Because Wildcats play basketball, dad“.

Do you know who are the Wildcats?   They are the basketball team in High School Musical.   It’s all because of him  ….

zac

*shake head*

So, there’s no price for guessing what she’ll be getting this Christmas eh?  Anything for his princess.

another busy sunday

After Ashley is done with her arts class today, we walked around the mall.  Except for looking to buy promotional cugs and mugs, we had no intention of getting anything when we went into Ikea but……… we ended up with something really big and heavy.   Hubs ended up buying a table with four chairs for the patio.  He said he wants to have more gatherings with his buddies at our house :)

SAM_0729

Uh-oh….see who is enjoying the new table and chairs? She brought out her book and a bowl of marshmallows to eat.

SAM_0736

Then she decided to ‘open’ a restaurant and cook for all her friends.  I bet she’ll be spending more time outside now :)

Next on hub’s list is a BBQ set.  I think we need a bigger home.
