Nam Restaurant, Bon Ton, Langkawi

Posted on Dec 29, 2011 under family, food, travel | 10 Comments

This is a continuation of our trip to Langkawi recently :) A must visit place for us each time when we are there is the Nam Restaurant at Bon Ton Resort.  I heart this unique resort.  It is just minutes drive away from the main beach of Pantai Cenang.  A hidden gem if you asked me.   Bon Ton is built on the grounds of a 100 year old coconut plantation and features traditional Malay houses that are beautifully restored into luxurious villas, a pool/jacuzzi as well as the Nam restaurant.   This restaurant offers a fusion of western and eastern cuisine and is regarded as one of the best restaurants in Langkawi.  Food is quite expensive but delicious.  Below are some pics of our lovely lunch.

The Nam Restaurant.  It overlooks a lotus lagoon.  This place is so relaxing.  You can see the peak of Mount Mat Cincang on the horizon and I read somewhere that the sunset view is just breathtaking.

Bon Ton Resort and Restaurant is eclectic and full of character. Oh I forgot to add that there are many cats roaming in this place. There are also dogs in a caged compound.  It all started when Bon Ton Restaurant in KL began rescuing and sheltering street dogs and cats.  So when the owner, Narelle came to open this island branch, she brought the animals along.  Thus, the Langkawi Animal Shelter and Sanctuary Foundation (LASSie) was set-up to receive, rehabilitate and care for neglected, abused and needy animals.  The cats we saw are so cute and chubby.  Ashley had a great time talking to them but you know how cats are.  They are so cool and couldn’t be bothered at all *chuckle*  We look forward to returning soon.

Eating In Langkawi

As soon as we landed in Langkawi, we went to Telaga Harbour Front which is also known as Perdana Quay for late lunch.  This place is where yachts of various sizes berth and there is a row of quayside restaurants and bistros here.

l3

Hope to own one of these one day

Some of the restaurants along the quay

l2

We settled for Hamachi, a Japanese restaurant.

l5

We ordered Gyoza, chicken teriyaki, …

l4

Grilled Ise Ebi Lobster…….simply delicious!

l6

My favourite – Grilled Saba (Mackerel) in Teriyaki Sauce

The food was good and we will definitely return to this restaurant.  We enjoy having our meals at Telaga Harbour because this place is so relaxing and breezy.

Our holiday

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 under family, travel | 17 Comments

We are back from a short break at the legendary island of Langkawi.   I love Langkawi and wish we could go there more often.  This holiday is of course too short :(   Hubs started planning for our next vacation as soon as we reached home….hehehehe.   Below are some pics taken during our holiday.

l1

Sunset at Berjaya Langkawi.  Ain’t that beautiful?

l6

We stayed in a chalet at the rainforest.  The resort is huge and beautiful.  We usually take the resort buggy to go back to the chalet because it is quite a distance from the lobby and the beach.  I booked a Superior Chalet but they upgraded ours to Deluxe :)   They are similar except that the Deluxe chalet is more spacious.

l4

Ashley and a new found friend.  She loves to build sandcastles and looking for seashells.

l2

The monkey swinging on the bar. Just like the monkeys we see at the resort.

Happy in the pool

Ms. Grumpy who is also known as Ms. Parrot also has her own itinerary.  She wants to go here, do this, go there, do that and etc.  Pretty tiring for the parents who just want to relax by the beach :)   Luckily I still managed to read my book and also the term life insurance write-up.  More coming up on what we did or ate in Langkawi.

i’ll be back …..

Last Part of Our Trip To Malacca

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 under family, food, travel | 13 Comments

Hey peeps, this is the last installment of our recent trip to Malacca. We stayed at the charming Hotel Puri again.  This time I asked for a room on the ground floor (no need to climb up the stairs).  Our room overlooks the little garden.  It was really nice.  Sorry, didn’t take a photo of the room.

m1

This is the open courtyard where we had our breakfast.  The stay comes with complimentary breakfast for 2.  No charge for Ashley too.

We managed to check out the popular Donald and Lily cafe during this trip.  They are famous for Nyonya food and is located @ Jalan Hang Jebat.

m4

We had Nyonya Curry Laksa

m5

Mee Siam

m7

Nyonya Rojak which consists of mainly fish balls, fish cakes and tofu.  Pretty interesting dish.  This is the only food available that Ashley could eat that day.  Everything else was sold out when we reached there at around 2 pm.  Overall, I find the food was ok only, nothing spectacular.  Probably it is because the whole place was crowded and I didn’t feel too comfortable eating there. We also had to finish our food real fast as the sky was really dark and we did not want to be caught in the rain.

m8

Later in the evening, we walked along Jonker Street to check out the Night Market.  To our surprised, we saw a Caucasian man selling food at the market.  According to the placards he put on the stall, this man is a chef from Montana.  He was selling pasta and burgers.  Business was good as many people were crowding around him, waiting for their orders.  Ashley wanted Mac & Cheese so we ordered one from him.  It was delish.  I wanted to find out more about why he’s there but he was very busy so we left.

m3

Last but not least, we got to drink this nice Chilled Coffee from Lao Qian Cafe, inside the Shan Shu Gong shop. The glass is freeze with crushed ice inside.  Freshly brewed milk coffee is poured into the glass when order is placed.

Things To Do In Malacca

Posted on Nov 02, 2011 under family, travel | 17 Comments

We did a lot of touristy stuff this time when we were in Malacca.    Ms. Chatter Box insisted on taking the trishaw ride so off we went.

trishaw

I didn’t take any photos of us on the trishaw (beca) because it was a hilarious and guilty trip.  Hilarious because as soon as we sat down on the trishaw, the Pakcik (uncle) quickly switched on a Chinese CD which consists of songs in the 70’s.  I couldn’t stop laughing.  Man, it was hilarious.  Just imagine, all 3 of us on a trishaw, going around Malacca with Chinese songs blaring from the trishaw.  Guilty because I felt bad as the poor Pakcik had to ferry all 3 of us around.  We are definitely not light.  My hubby kept asking him, “Bolehkah Pakcik?”  (Is it ok uncle?)  Luckily there was no need to go up the slope.

After the trishaw ride, we took the Malacca River Boat Cruise.  The photo above just reminded me that I have to check out www.besteyelashenhancer.net :)   We enjoyed the river cruise very much.  It was fun to see the old buildings that have been repainted and turned into guest houses or cafes.   We even saw a few big monitor lizards swimming in the river.  Exciting!

That’s what we did in Malacca besides visiting Jonker Street.  Will update more on what we ate later :)

Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary In Melaka

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 under family, travel | 11 Comments

Hey Peeps.  We’re back from a short stay in Malacca.  Since Ashley’s exam is over, we decided to make a short trip to this historical city which is one of our favourite destinations :)   Let me bore you with what we did there.   First stop was the Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary.

Ashley was talking to the bird which knows how to say Hello and scream like a child.  She asked the bird if it knows the peacock/peahens at the next cage *chuckle*

SAM_1958

There were many beautiful butterflies at the special enclosure.  Even saw two that were busy making babies :)

SAM_1962

After the butterflies, we crossed over the koi pond which is behind the waterfall.

SAM_1963

Lots of tadpoles in the water

SAM_1970

The missy had loads of fun feeding the hungry koi fishes.  They are so beautiful.  After the feeding session, the fishes would swim in a row and head to the other side of the pond.

Besides butterflies, there are many different types of birds, creepy crawlies, gibbons, chameleons, snakes, insects, crocodiles, leopards and tortoises at the farm.

SAM_2014-1

I even found cute elephants fridge magnets at the Butterfly Sanctuary.  Of course, Ashley wanted the green monkey because it has a pink face.  It was a fun trip for us.  We left the place after spending about 1.5 hours there.  Do stay tuned on where we went next.

Another Roadtrip

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 under family, good stuff, travel | 15 Comments

How’s your Raya/Merdeka holidays peeps?  Enjoying yourselves?  Can’t believe that the holidays are coming to an end and I have to go to work tomorrow :(    On the bright side, tomorrow is Friday :P

We took another road trip yesterday and hubs decided to go to Bentong for some homemade ice-cream.  He remembers having this yummy ice-cream when he was a kid and had been raving about it.  Hubs actually forgot the name of the ice-cream place but we googled Bentong Ice cream and saw many blog posts on Kow Po Coffee Shop which serve delicious homemade ice cream.

SAM_1662

We arrived in Bentong after a 45 mins drive from KL.   We were lucky to be able to get a table right away :)

Hubs and I shared this Jumbo set which consists of 3 scoops of Ice cream (choc, durian and vanilla).  The ice-creams are really good. They are so smooth and creamy.  Their best seller is of course the durian flavour ones and ice kacang.  Besides ice cream, you can also order yong tau foo.  This ice cream place is so packed and the crowd kept coming in.  We spent about 20 mins here and then head over to our next destination.  We will definitely return to this hidden gem in Bentong.  Coming up next is another  good eating place we went to.  Do stay tuned :)

Seafood Restaurant In Tg. Sepat

Posted on Jun 09, 2011 under food, travel | 11 Comments

A continuation on our trip to Bagan Lalang.  After having spending some time at the Lover’s Bridge, we walked over to the restaurant for lunch.  There are 2 restaurants at the entrance to the bridge.  One is Ocen Seafood Restaurant and the other one is Restoran Ban Joo Heng.   We went to the later one.

Here’s what we ordered

fried squid

DSC05567

sweet and sour crab

Stir fried Cantonese Noodle (wat tan hor) for Ashley

The food was not bad except for the crabs.  They thought Ashley was going to eat them so they didn’t add any chilli.  The plate of crabs was pretty bland to me.  Total bill comes to about rm80.  Cheap eh?

We went home after lunch.  Along the way, there are many dragonfruit farms and also stalls selling the fruits.  We told Ashley that we would be stopping at a farm because I have never seen dragonfruit trees before.  She was pretty excited because she said she has never seen a farmer before :D

dragonfruit2

Unfortunately, the farm where we stopped was closed.  I could only take a photo of the tree from the outside.  Can you see those white paper bags near the tree?  They are used to protect the dragonfruits before being plucked.  Ashley was quite upset that she didn’t get to see a farmer :)   We told her that we’ll look for one next time.

DSC05583

We bought some dragonfruits back.  RM12 for 5 pieces.   That’s all about our road trip. It was fun :)

our road trip to bagan lalang

Posted on Jun 07, 2011 under family, travel | 19 Comments

After hearing so much about Sepang Gold Coast/Morib Beach, Bagan Lalang, we finally made a trip there over the weekend.   The drive was about an hour and we started out late. Made a few pitstops to the gas station, washroom, etc and we finally reached the beach around noon.  It was a hot day.

The missy insisted on changing to this batik outfit when we reached the beach

Next time, we should start our journey early so we can reach  the beach before 10am.  After some fun in the sun, we drove for about 20 minutes to Tanjung Sepat in search of the famous pau shop. Tanjung Sepat is a small fishing town Kuala Langat, Selangor.  It is well-known for its seafood restaurants, keropok, bak kut teh and fishballs. The GPS took us to this coffeeshop – Hai Yew Hin which is famous for its “sang yuk pau”, “mui choy pau”, “vege pau”, “peanut and red bean paus“.  In case you don’t know, you can eat all the above at this coffee shop BUT, you cannot have takeaway.  Means, No Tapau.  Don’t know what kind of crazy service this is.  You can have takeaway but you got to buy them from their shop/factory across the road.   So, I went over and all were sold out.

pau

No choice but to sit in the coffeeshop for a while to savor the famous pau.  Hubs ordered 3 ’sang yuk’ paus.  I wasn’t in the mood to eat because it was such a hot and stuffy day.   I took a small bite.  Don’t know why they are so famous because they tasted so-so to me.  Nothing spectacular :D

Next, we went to search for the Lover’s Bridge, a landmark in this fishing town.  Found it after a few missed turns.

bridge1

This is the famous bridge.  3/4 of it is made of concrete and the balance made of wooden planks.  This is actually where the fishing boats are moored.  I enjoyed coming here.  It’s very breezy.  I bet it must be beautiful at sunset.  A must-see if you are a visitor to this village.

bridge2

Ms. Cheeky enjoying the breeze.  I only dared to walk about 10 feet on this bridge.  I have this fear of crossing bridges.  Even pedestrian bridge.  Hubs took Ashley all the way towards the wooden planks and came back.  I guess she’s not scared like her mama :)   If only he held my hand too….then perhaps I won’t be so scared =^_^= Ok…that’s all for now.   Will post more about our trip tomorrow.  Do stay tuned.
