We had breakfast at this lovely cafe called Cafe 1511 on Heeren Street (Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock). I love walking along Heeren Street which was known as the Millionaire’s Row of Malacca. In the olden days, wealthy Peranakan and Chinese merchants used to live on this street in their lavish mansions. There are hardly any metal buildings here. What you can see are restored traditional shophouses which have been turned into boutique hotels, shops and quaint lil cafes.
There was a fish pond inside Cafe 1511. This area is like the second living room with a courtyard/airwell.
Besides American Breakfast for everyone, we also ordered Otak-Otak…
pai tee
and mom ordered Nonya curry.
Breakfast was good 🙂 After that we walked over to the Christ Church for some photo-taking session.
The beautiful church. Occasionally we can hear the church bell tolling 🙂
The famous trishaw ride. This is one of the trishaws with the least flowers on it. I did not sit on one because there is loud Techno music blaring from these trishaws while taking the passengers for a tour.
After this, hubs wanted to visit the Hang Li Poh’s well. We all went in my sister’s car and finally arrived after a few missed turns. Our GPS could not detect any satellite signal that day, hence we had to rely on the road signs. You know what’s puzzling? There are so many cemeteries in Malacca. We passed by many Muslims, Christians and Chinese cemeteries while looking for Hang Li Poh’s well. Eerie. Oh, we also saw funeral parlours everywhere and there were funerals going on every time.
The Hang Li Poh’s well which is the oldest well in Malacca. It is believed that the well never dried up, not even during times of extreme drought and it became the city’s only source of water back in the olden days.
Lunch was at Farmosa Chicken Rice Ball shop near the hotel. Nothing special to me, maybe because I’m not a big fan of rice.
We heard that the famous Chicken Rice Ball was at Chung Wah Coffeeshop but can you see the queue? Crazy! After lunch, my sisters and my mom left for KL. We stayed on for another day. We also met a mommy blogger and her kids in Malacca. Do stay tuned on what we did the next day and who we met up with 😀
eh i love the chicken rice shop at chung wah. dunno why. maybe the little ball rice looks cute hehhe…
Barb miss the chicken rice ball so much!! I’m thinking when can we go there again!!!
I think the chicken rice ball is overrated. Firstly, the chicken was not as tasty as before..last time , ard 6 yrs ago, the chicken had a tinge of pandan flavour, chopped up ugly but tasty, now the chicken is just like any normal chicken. Secondly, the ‘shuin kam sui’ – lime juice was my favourite with chicken rice but now, when you order shin kam sui, they give you ‘kat chai sui’ – calamansi pulak. I was sorely disappointed and swear will never made to queue like an idiot again to have this chicken rice.
Malacca has sooo much more to offer than to spend 1 hour or more for chicken rice right ? Just looking at all the quaint cafes you’ve found, I’d go again..
… and skip the chicken rice balls.
Ha ha, I saw the long queue at this chicken rice restaurant too when I was there.
Chicken rice balls… I miss them!!
And the otak otak looks bloody good!
Wah! Really all yummy food. Make me drooling. I like the Otak Otak, the chicken rice ball and the Nyonya Curry noodle. Didn’t you try the Cendol and the satay celup there?
Barb, where did u stay while in malacca? thought of going year end.. i was surprised to see the long queue.. serious! really lining up .. fatt tatt like that..
Oh man! The nyonya curry looks so good. It has been a really long time since I last went to Malacca.
You really enjoy the view and food, eh? I like your breakfast. Make me hungry now. And I don’t think I’ll queue up for that chicken rice stall… Man, I don’t have the stamina, especially with a rumbling tummy!
U guys very pandai cari makan lah, always end up with good food eventhough it’s your first visit there 🙂 The chicken rice queue… *faint*
I think the chicken rice ball is so-so only. My Hubs fave coz he is from Malacca..haha. Satay celup is nice..something special.
the malacca chicken rice is the best chicken rice i’ve tasted so far but that was like more than 10 years ago when i went there. wonder if they still taste the same? Even in Ipoh cant find one that taste as good as theirs.
The last time we went to Malacca, like 7 years ago, hahaha… my husband die die also wanted to eat the chicken rice ball but I personallay felt that it was just so so…
this time we missed the trishaw and also visit to the Christ Church, raining whole day really spoilt the plan. I would love to let my boys to try the Trishaw, i think everytime when i go to Melaka i will sit on the Trishaw. LOL!
The famous chicken rice, that day is my second time try out. I cannot remember the first time i try what is the taste, that is more than 15 years ago!!!
Another interesting cafe you found! tsk tsk tsk..salute you.
A famosa one is not good lah, just for tourist saja… I have to agree with Elaine, the Chung Hwa one is not as good as it used to be, but still much much better than the A Famosa one. YOu know what, we always queued, because it is hub’s favourite joint, everytime we go back, for sure it is chicken rice, I mean every time…
the chicken rice ball at the taman where im staying even nicer! hahaha… the Q is really crazy! even for the satay celup. really siao! hmmm… i heard of Cafe 1511, think i shud drop by to check it out ^o^
Went to Malacca with my family 2 yrs back. Eaten this chicken rice balls too at the same place. Nothing special. I preferred the original Hainanese chicken rice anytime compared to this dish.
Wow, the otak otak and nyonya curry mee looks tasty! There was an old man with a big albino python in his trishaw infront of the church and we have to pay RM10 to take photos with the reptile dangling on our necks.
I loved how the beautiful shophouses in Jonker Street were preserved and turned into useful outlets serving tourists. Aah, if only they could do the same for Panglima Lane in Ipoh instead of just leaving them abandoned liked what they are doing now.
Overall, Malacca is a nice place to visit and worth every minute of the time!
Agree with Elaine, the taste has changed to much compare to many years back. So disappointed with the taste of the chicken rice this shop is serving now 🙁
Very informative post that introducing the famous ‘eat-out’ of Malacca!
