Multiplication Strategy

I was reading a flyer last night when Ashley told me that she’s doing a new multiplication homework from the Mental Maths class. I asked her if she could teach me what she learned in class because mommy doesn’t know how to do it.  She was very happy and eager to teach me *wink*  I just realized that the method they used is simple and also a fast way to get the answer.  For example :

39 x 2 (break up 39 to 2 parts)

3 x 2 =       6

9 x 2 =  +  18

Answer :  78

The tricky part is knowing where to place the numbers 🙂   Geez, I didn’t know that it is so simple and easy to do multiplications.  No price for guessing how my Maths was when I was in school huh?

maths

Still a few errors here and there as Ashley was unsure of the placing of the numbers.  She put the first number under the 100 column  hence she added them up wrongly.  Overall, she is doing good in class and I am glad that she is way better in Maths than moi 🙂

My girl is still doing addition and subtraction. But I’ll stop her class by end of this month because I found that she’s not interested in mental math – she cries and whines while doing her homework, almost everytime 🙁

oh how long has Avery joined the class? Ashley used to whine too but i’ve been giving her lots of praises and encouragement 🙂

  3. ChloeMummy says:

Ashley is really good in maths. I’m interested to send Chloe to such classes too. I feel very intimated by the abacus cos I can’t seem to understand how it works. I’m a maths dummie hehe :p

i think mental maths is good hence the children can catch up easily. i was intimidated by the abacus but it is actually a very easy counting tool. you’ll know how it works if chloe attends the class. i found out on the first day 😛

  4. Mummy Gwen says:

Ashley is doing great. Smart gal. Thanks for teaching aunty too..hehe. Gwen always whines when doing her math homework. May I know which center teaches mental maths?

thanks. i send her to UCMAS for mental maths. There are many branches in KL.

I was poor in maths during school days and was punished badly by the maths teacher. Wish I had mental maths class then!

oh i was very poor in maths and dislike this subject. i too wish there was mental maths back then 😀

  6. wow she can do multiplication!? bravo! My Ashley is still on addition and subtraction 🙂

Child needs encouragement from time to time to get better. I believe the way you ask Ashley to teach you is method of telling her that she is better than mummy. I am sure this can boost up her confident in UCMAS Maths.

Wow, this is interesting.. Maths used to be my favourite subject when I was schooling 😉

  9. zmm says:

  10. mnhl says:

  12. Kiddothings says:

Gosh, if only I knew of this method I wouldn’t suck at math so badly…no wait…I’d still suck at math coz I’m just math stoopid.

  13. ivy says:

if only i know maths was so easy, coz i never PASS this subject in school…lol…

but ur girl got determination to learn this.. since i cancelled my boy Mental Math class last 2 mths, he no more whining and crying now, and the abacus also tak tau buang mana…

  14. MK mummy says:

geez … I also didnt know that … now I am learning something useful today… thanks, Barb..

I wish I can send my girl to mental math here, too bad, no such thing over here.. 🙁

    Bravo, Ashley !!

    hi there,

came across ur site when i read others and have since been a silent reader.

i am really interested in mental maths for my 4Y but i heard feedbacks where kids would be confused with the ‘traditional’ method of summation from right to left whereas using abacus/mental maths, the summation is from left to right. does ashley have this confusion?

Hi, replied you via email. Hope you received it 🙂

    Well done Ashley!

I am poor at Math and i don’t like that subject. I was thinking to sent my boys for those mental math class, but think of the homework part i surrender. 🙁 They already got enough homework from school, i don’t want to stress myself out with additional homework again. I am so selfish. 🙁

  17. etceteramommy says:

Well done Ashley and thanks for sharing. I learned something new too today.

  18. claire says:

I love maths..and I think I am used to the old way! slower.. but u know, old habits die hard.. or should i say, cannot teach old dogs new tricks? hahaa… anyway, for the younger generation, easier to be this way..

  19. Bravo Ashley. My girl just has no interest at all in math, don’t know how to encourage her…might be I just let her pick up herself as time comes..like a saying in hokkien:’leave cow eat grass itself’ means to see how she grows naturally. 🙂 Haha..hope you understand.

  20. Health Freak says:

Very good method! Hmmm, now I’m thinking of sending Sherilyn to mental math class too! BTW, if 2 digits and more numbers multiply how to do? For eg 42 x 133? How ah?

err…i don’t know yet. will let you know when ashley is doing 2 digits multiply 🙂

  21. mel says:
