Ashley did not like the pacifier when she was a baby because she loves her thumb. From newborn until about 2 years old, she would suck her thumb often, especially when she wanted to calm or comfort herself. Also, every time when she sleeps, she would suck her thumb and play with my hair. She only wants her mommy’s hair. A very strange habit huh? Her thumb-sucking activity was not vigorous but it caused calluses to develop on her thumb. As she grew older, her thumb-sucking became less. She only does that when she goes to bed. We did not discourage her from doing it or pressure her to stop. Now at the age of 5 years old, she has finally stopped sucking her thumb 🙂 She just stop doing it on her own. I am glad to say that the calluses have disappeared from her thumb now. Sometimes I do miss seeing her suck her thumb though 🙂

Every kids have their own habit. My boy used to bite his fingernails. But luckily he stop after about 1 year sting.
hahaha..mama misses the thumb sucking?? if she still sucks it now, u will be worrying more than missing.. as for my 3 kids, they suck pacifier.. but lost the interest around 3 years old.. i think! hahaha..cannot remember..

HQ sucks his thumb too… and still does it when he goes to sleep. Like you, we did not do anything to discourage him 😛
Both my kids sucked their thumbs too when they were babies and I think it was natural, so I didn’t stop them. Just make sure their thumbs were clean. My son stopped on his own after some time but his sister continued until about 4. To wean her from her thumb, I applied some bitter powder called ‘chuen pui’ on her thumb and it worked. Some people applied this powder on the pacifiers too and it can be purchased from the Chinese medical hall. Safe to consume but very bitter. Now, she will play with the corners of her pillow until she drifts off to sleep. Happy memories of being mummy, thanks for that!
Erm, why dun u rub her finger some “minyak cap kapak” then she’ll probably refuse to suck her thumb anymore. These days i noticed my son Calvin was sucking his thumb as well. Then later i found out he was biting his nail! OMG, so now every time i check his nail, if long i cut it!
oh gosh…i am happy to hear this! I have been trying to get Christopher to stop but so far failed. Sigh…hope like Ashley he will stop on his own too!
My girl doesn’t need pacifier nor thumb for comfort. But she has nail-bitting habit (reducing now and crossing my fingers) which is more terrifying and not hygiene!
Ha..my girl never needs pacifier nor thumb for comfort since she was a baby. She only wants her little “paw paw” (bolster)till today. She always said her “paw paw” is the most cosy thing to have.
My little kid has the same problem too, but luckily he has finally stopped! LoL!
Good that she stopped on her own. Heard that thumb sucking might interfere with the way her permanent teeth grows later on
Ashley looked so different then… so cute! Chloe never sucked anything (only pacifier until 13m) and never needed anything for security or to comfort herself… no bolster, pillow, blankie, toy whatsoever. She’s so unlike a typical child haha.

i like this saying of yours,”sometimes i do miss her sucking her time” it just reminds me of things that we are miss about own children’s antic and how fast they really grow.

hmm..so is 5 the final year that these thumb-suckers stop with their sucking? If so, I have 2 more years to go with my Ash. But then, i might have to wait for eternity with lil Em cos she is into her pacifier 🙁

good girl ashley! next time you see rye li, please tell that you have stopped sucking your thumb just like that. this girl tells me that she cannot stop coz she cannot sleep without it. sigh!
