Checking The Barcodes

Ever since the melamine contamination scare, I have been extra careful when buying stuff. I certainly do not want to buy any Made In China foodstuff. Then recently, I received an email regarding the barcodes on the products. If the product you buy did not indicate where it is from, then you can check the barcodes. If the first 3 digits are 690-692, then it is Made in China. An example is the one below. 471 means that it is from Taiwan.

Here is a list of the barcodes as indicated in the email.

00-09 USA & Canada
30-37 France
40-44 Germany
45-49 Japan
50 UK
76 Swiss
471 Taiwan
489 – Hong Kong
690-692 China
955 Malaysia

Just the other day, I was at the market and bought a packet of Udon noodles for Ashley. I asked the seller if it was from China and she said no. She even told me that she does not sell any products from China because of the recent hoo-ha and the packet of Udon noodle was from Taiwan though it’s a Japanese product. So I happily bought it.

When I got home, I remember the barcode email I received and opened it to check. The first 3 digits of the barcode is 690 which means it is actually Made In China *slaps forehead* No wonder there was no indication where it was made in on the packet. It only shows the ingredient, nutritional information and name of the company (Chinese name so I thought it’s from Taiwan). Needless to say, I threw the packet of udon away. Better be safe than sorry eh?

Thanks for the codes, very useful. I’ve also seen some different barcode formats than the ones you posted. Wonder if the codes are different for those.
