Hand Foot & Mouth Disease

I read in the papers today that certain kindergartens are closed because some children are infected with the Hand, Foot & Mouth (HFM) disease.  It was also reported that a pupil from S.K. Seri Mega school has  HFMD. This school is just opposite Ashley’s kindy 🙁   I checked with a mother of Ashley’s classmate as she has 2 older daughters attending this school.  She confirmed that the news is true and many students have HFM and not only 1 as reported in the papers.  Even some officers from the Ministry of Education were at the school yesterday to check on the situation.  So far, there is no directive to close the school yet.  Guess there is an outbreak of HFMD now.  This is so scary eventhough it’s not as bad as mesothelioma.  Have to be extra careful and practice good personal hygiene.  I better avoid crowded places too.

Below is some information from the Sarawak Health Government website :-

HFMD is moderately contagious. A person is most contagious during the first week of the illness. The virus can be transmitted from person to person via direct contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters, or the stool of infected persons. The virus may continue to be excreted in the stools of infected persons up till 1 month. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals

  2. HFMD is so common nowadays, no thanks to abuse of antibiotics usage. I think if we go back to organic farming the problem might reduce!

    Yes Barbara,

HFMD will not going to end if the dry season is still on as the bacteria is more active during dry season….pray for more rain to come….

  5. The weather’s freakingly hot, making our kids icky and sticky all day long and more susceptible to falling sick or cathing an infection. Better take care .

HFM is most easily spread in kindie as kindie kids are all explorers. hand, feet going into their mouth and all. so just take care and advise ashley to never put her hands in her mouth and try to keep clean all the time. but it wont be easy as her classmates can easily be not too clean n touch her as they play. when i was in smart reader, the HFM out break too and we had such a headache to control the situation. it’s a nightmare!
