When Grandparents Spoil Their Grandchildren

We all know that the grandparents’ job is to spoil their grandchildren.  My mom and dad are no exception.  Ashley is their only grandchild so they really spoil her till no end.  What do they do?  They stuff her with junk food, especially my dad.  My mom knows that I don’t like Ashley eating junk food because it is bad.  She would buy her ice-cream once in a blue moon.  My dad on the other hand, buys Ashley loads of gummy bears, sugus sweets and ice-cream.

Since Ashley goes to the office every day after school, she sees my dad daily.  The office is like the junk food heaven for a kid.  Then he started giving  her chocolates on top of the gummy bears *sigh*  Chocolates are baaaaad, especially when she’s the heaty type. Dad would give her a kit-kat secretly and let her finish it in his room.  He thinks that since I couldn’t see it so I won’t know but Ashley who knows that she is not allowed to eat chocolates would feel bad and spill the beans later.  This went on for about 2 weeks.  Ashley developed an ulcer on her lips.  Not sure if it’s due to the chocs or virus.  So I took the opportunity to tell my dad to stop giving her chocs.  Just stick with the gummy bears.  I also warned Ashley that she better not take anymore chocs and only can have 1 gummy a day.  I told her I have eyes everywhere and she can’t hide from me….hehehehehehhe

I believe that spoiling the grandchildren is their right as a grandparent, but there should be some limits 🙂

Nvm la, at least Ashley is ‘hang fook’ in this way..
Just make her drink more water lo… ^^

yes she is “hang fook” but too much junk food is no good 🙂

  2. ipohgal says:

Yes, I agreed with Hayley. Your kid is lucky. Just give her more water. My kids are not that lucky. Their grandparents were no longer in this world. Gone to heaven. Nobody to spoil them. Sometimes when they see the stars in the night sky, I told them their grandparents were up there among the stars, watching over them. That was the only consolation we could find!

Yes, Ashley is lucky but I feel everything has to be taken in moderation. It’s bad when the kid fall sick from all the junk food and mommy has to take care of her. Just last week, she ate lots of chocs and now she has constipation 🙁

I don’t know whether I’ll spoil my grandchildren (if I have them later) in my golden age. But my kids’ grandparents spoilt them to the max! Whatever thing they asked will surely get granted. Nevermind la, restrict the junks intake and drink more fluid.

Anyway, grandparents are trying to make the grandchildren happy.

it’s really hard to restrict because my parents always think that what they gave her is just a little amount

Thanks goodness it is your own parents who spoilt Ashley. What if it is your PIL, it is even hard to tell them not to spoilt the grand child. I may encounter similar situation when April and May are taking care by my PIL next month onwards. Am still worrying now.

my mil doesn’t buy her junk food cos she knows i don’t like it…and she doesn’t like it that i don’t like it…hehhehehehe

Your dad sounds exactly like my dad!! Sherilyn has a cough and some phlegm now but my dad bought her an ice cream just now and that rascal whacked the whole ice cream all by herself!! BTW, forgot to thank you for linking my online store in your blog, thanks so much 🙂

    you are welcome 😉

  6. ChloeMummy says:

It’s hard not to spoil her cos she’s just too ADORABLE! 🙂 Once in a while should be ok but if this is a daily affair, I would frown too…

hahaaha..thanks. but it is a daily affair for us

  7. tell yr dad he can spoil Ash in nicer ways.. sponsoring her arts class,, buy nice shoes,, nice clothes.. etc
Mine spoils her w candy too since she can’t take anything dairy.. but luckily she stops at 2

if he gives those things, ashley won’t know but junk food? she loves it.

  8. mott says:

Ya…I am heaty too, esp with too much chocolate. So, I know how you feel about her eating too much junk food. My inlaws love to give my boys, tesco chips (ya..they purposely buy it from tesco and bring it here for them)…

    HOW?

    hide them! 😀

  9. Krystal says:

I would love to be in Ashley’s shoes…only grandchild and spoilt to the max! 🙂 Definitely you’re not alone – I think all grandparents do spoil their grandchildren in some way or the other. Juz yest, my dad bought Ryan an ipod touch out of the blue…aiyoh, me oso dunno what it is

oh my…that’s a cool gift from grandpa 🙂 i wish my dad would be those instead of junk food 😀

  10. Ann says:

yes, there should be limits and grandparents should respect the parents wish. Coz at the end of the day when the kid falls ill, it is the parents who suffer and worry.

For me, as long as Christopher is not ill and not jsut recovered, he can eat anything in moderation. But I tell him, he wants to eat, then he must dirnk all the stuff that I boil.

And I harp and harp that no matter what what he eat, he must ask me first. If not….TROUBLE !!!

i gotta start drumming into the missy’s head too 🙂

  11. Paik Ling says:

That’s NOTHING!! my MIL gives B3 TWISTIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Adrine says:

I’m not a fan of sweets and chocs for kids too. Ok for the occasional reward but not on a regular basis. but of course everyone has their own views…..my in laws think my girl is “deprived” bcos of that.

sigh..my parents think the same way too

  13. kerry says:

My MIL spoils the girls rotten too. She’ll stock up chocolates, ice-creams & sweets at her house. She knows we don’t like it so she try to limit the girls only 1 junk per visit. She also stuffed the girls with fruits after the junks. Haha.

My girls just look forward going back to granny’s house for dinner each week.

it’s funny that when we were kids, my parents don’t like us eating junk food but now they spoil the grandkid with the same thing 🙁

  14. Alice Law says:

My mom doesn’t spoil my kids but my MIL does… to the extend if they refused to eat, she claimed it’s ok and stuffed them with biscuits and junks, her reasoning was, ” It’s better compared to they don’t have anything!”(Roll eyes)

  15. Annie Q says:

hmmmm…so far my mum and my pil never spoil my kids with junk food nor candies. But my mum will spoil them with clothes or my father in law will spoil them with ice cream. I think i am the one spoil them more. HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA
