The dreaded abbreviation.  It has finally arrived at our household. No prize for guessing who got it 🙁  Ashley complained that her throat was painful last week.  There was also an ulcer inside her mouth. I thought maybe she was heaty because she gets ulcers once in a while.  I got her to gargle her mouth more often with salt water and gave her Esberitox as she has a bit of a runny nose too.

Her ‘sore throat’ went away after 2 days and I thought nothing about it.  Then yesterday evening, she said her throat is painful again.  I didn’t check her mouth and let her resume the salt water mouth gargle.  This morning, she said she may need to see the doctor as her throat is very painful 🙁  Once the paed checked it, he said, “oh dear, her mouth is full of ulcers”.   There are no spots on her body.

Can you spot the reddish spots inside her mouth?  They are the darn ulcers and are everywhere, even on her throat 🙁

Medication which consists of a cold meds, Nurofen for the pain, gel to numb the mouth and Esberitox.  No antibiotics as it doesn’t help, according to the paed.  He also said to give her lots of yoghurt and ice-cream if she doesn’t feel like eating.

Hi, sorry to hear about your lil’ girl. Hope she is still able to eat a little.

May I ask, do you give your girl Esberitox as a supplement long term, or only as and when? My boy was prone to tonsils and I noticed that he would be ok with Esberitox. But when I stopped for a few months, he gets tonsilities back. I’m just not too sure if it is safe to take Esberitox long term.

Hi Joanne, thanks for dropping by my blog. I don’t give Ashley Esberitox daily…only when she is having cold. However, her paed said Esberitox is good for strengthening the immune system. If you are not sure, perhaps you could check with your son’s paed. Ashley is prone to getting ulcers so I am giving her Refresh from E-Excel. It is in powder form and you have to dilute it in water. Taste like Lemon Tea 🙂

poor girl! it takes about a week to heal and the only good thing out of this is ice cream and yoghurt for the kids but still painful! 🙁

hope she is ok dealing with it. and my advice to you barb is not to share her food and to wash your hands each time. i was lucky that i didnt get it off my girls but my sister in law did from her boy and she said it hurts like hell. i think it’s more painful in adults than in kids. take care!

thanks for your kind advice syn nee. ashley is ok, drinking/eating slowly and kinda crabby. she looked forward to going to the big school today but sadly, could only watch from a distance while i went there to inform the teacher and to buy her books.

confirm HFMD? poor ashley…get well soon. I can’t offer you any advice as I’m quite helpless too :0( My little Carol caught tonsilitis the 3rd time in a year…..gosh…..painful to see, but more painful when your kid is not eating well…

  8. So sorry to know this. My girl had HFMD when she was 2 year plus. It was a nightmare to her. What I remember, best to give ice-cream, I think Ashley sure would feel good.
Hope she has a speedy recovery.

  9. yvonne says:

Oh poor Ashley. According to my babysitter, we have to be extra hygiene when children have hmfd. Wash/wipe their hands/feet frequently, wipe the surfaces they touch the most and take in a lot of fluid. My girl kena twice from her classmates.

    wish her a speedy recovery.

  10. ChloeMummy says:

Oh dear, did she get it on the last day of school? One ulcer is bad enough for a child to bear, so I can’t imagine “a mouth full of ulcers”. Poor girl… Hope she will recover as fast as possible!

Yeah, the dreaded abbreviation. I hope my girls will never catch this darn painful thing. Sometimes when I have one, I already feel down and uncomfy. For a mouth full of them, goodness! Get well soon Ash so that you can enjoy your hols!

  15. Inspiredmom says:

Get well soon, Ashley.. Ian had it when he was 4. He lost his appetite, how not to with ulcers inside his mouth and throat. Lucky that the school holidays has started and Ashley can rest well at home.

  16. ipohgal says:

How sorry to hear your little precious down with this dreadful thing. Hope she will get well soon, the weather is rather bad, so take care and drink more water.

My daughter is down with high fever and a bad sore throat too for the last three days. A bit better today.

Not easy being moms to kids, especially when they are off the weather.

  17. Poor Ashley but hang in there. It can only get better. Let her have her fancy now, any junk she wants, as long as she gets enough liquid. There’s oral aid too, helps numb her mouth when she’s in pain.

  18. mery says:

Hope your girl will recover soon.

  19. Annie Q says:

Ooooucchhh!! I see i also can feel the pain. *sigh*

Hope it get over soon, usually it took about a week.

Yes, like Syn Nee said, wash her hand and your hand more often.

    *hug hug*

  20. Ann says:

I am curious…no spots still HFM? Coz my colleague’s daughter also had the same symptoms as Ashley and the pead didn’t say it was HFMD….she still went to school.
