Japan’s Children Day

Kodomo no Hi is Japan’s Children Day and it falls on 5th May. It is a day to celebrate the health and happiness of children.  We had dinner at a restaurant that day and while waiting for the election results, my friend Junko made Ashley a paper hat in the shape of a kabuto (samurai helmet), like she did for her children.  This is a popular craft which Japanese children make on this day.

Notice the black shawl that Ashley is wearing?  That is Junko’s breastfeeding shawl which she was playing with *slaps forehead*

Junko also made some traditional food known as chimaki, which is a dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves.  It tasted like mochi and very delicious 🙂
