I finally got to try the famous Sangkaya Coconut Ice-cream yesterday at Sunway Pyramid Mall. If you have not heard of it before, here is a little history about this ice-cream brand. The founders started their coconut ice-cream at the street corner of Jalan Alor and at pasar malams (night markets) in the Klang Valley. People started to spread about how delicious the coconut ice-creams are, hence their business grew. Today, you can find a Sangkaya stall in almost all the major shopping centers.
The coconut ice-cream is dairy free, made from undiluted coconut milk and free from preservatives. They are serve in halved coconut shell together with coconut flesh. Customers can add their own toppings which includes corn niblets, peanuts and toasted coconut.
I opted for the original Sangkaya ice-cream (RM10.00). So what do I think of it? Actually I prefer the ones at Chatuchak market in Bangkok which cost 350 baht (about rm4) and the ice-cream has more coconut taste. Well, since we can’t fly to Bangkok every weekend, so when there is yearning for some coconut ice-cream, we can just drive to the nearest Sangkaya outlet to savor it.
