The Flu Shot

Since Ashley is starting kindy next year, I am thinking of letting her get a Flu jab. I asked her paed about it the other day when we were there for her Pneumococcal jab. She told me that the Flu shot is not to prevent the normal cold and cough. It is more for protecting the child against flu which is more serious. When a person has caught the flu bug, it is rather serious. The person can be knocked out flat for a couple of days. I still haven’t decided yet. The flu shot is a yearly thing and it cost RM80 per shot. Have your little ones taken the flu shot?

No mine hasn’t. The shot isn’t just once off?

Wah..it’s done yearly ah? Is it really necessary, I wonder. Gwen hasn’t had it done yet.

It depends on your child. If she/he has a weak immunity, perhaps it would be good?

but generally, I’d rather my kids build up their immunity..even if it means they have to suffer the flu. I have been giving them echinacea tho..helps strengthen their immunity system. It’s in capsules. What I do is open it up and sprinkle the powder over JY’s oats (since he can’t swallow).

hv not heard abt flu shots before??? i guess if ashley eats well, having flu once in a while is still a healthy sign!

Nope. Not yet. But have been told by his paed to do so before he starts schooling next year.

Speaking from experience, a child needs to be immunised if he/she has suffered severely from flu. My oldest daughter has asthma. Therefore she needs a flu shot every year (free for her because of her case in Sydney, Aust) to prevent her from a severe asthma attack. Whereas, my youngest is generally healthy with the usual cough and cold in the winter months is not immunised. As Mott mentioned, it is best for the child to build its immunity levels.

I asked our paed before last year when Alycia kept falling sick. I can’t remember the exact words my dr said to me but he said something like there are thousands of bugs and that one flu bug does not help much in preventing a flu, or something to that effect. Our dr advised against the flu jab.

Ryan had his flu shot before he was a year old. I also plan to opt for it in due time before he starts nursery next year. Just treat it like normal immunisation.. it’s better be safe than sorry. Because of the new types of viruses around, hence the need to go back every year to get the latest protection. Actually adults are encouraged to go for it too…

hey everyone, thanks for your comments. Ashley’s paed didn’t say anything against the flu shot or for the shots. She said it’s entirely up to the parents. When I was a kid, I always had cough and cold (according to my mom), but she never got flu shot for me 🙂 Guess, better to let the child build up her own immunity level 🙂
