A toddler with ulcers

means one thing –  A very crabby and cranky toddler 🙁  It is a torture to see Ashley grimacing in pain every time she drinks or eat *sigh*  I wish that it was me who has the ulcers.

The bloody ulcer on her upper lip.  There is another smaller one on her inner left cheek.  She told me there is another one on the right but I couldn’t see it 🙁

I don’t understand why she is so heaty when she has been drinking lots of water every day, eating fruits daily and I boil herbal drinks for her twice a week.   Ashley is still feverish with temperature around 37.6 – 38.2 deg Celsius.  We have already seen the paed 3 x this week because she is also coughing 🙁  I just hope that darn ulcer will go away asap.

I have been applying the “watermelon” powder (a chinese medicated powder for ulcers) but it didn’t help.  Yesterday, I brought her to the paed again and was given the above Oral Aid.  She screams her head off each time I apply these gel/powder for her.  Very heartbreaking but Ashley didn’t refuse each time eventhough she knows she’ll be in lots of pain. She just wants me to hug her tightly while she cries her heart out after that 🙁

  3. rachel says:

thank God only 1 ucler. I remembered during PHilip’s sore throat infection, 20 ulcers just at the tongue… cant even swallow. so he ate ice cream, ice, yogurt…

    Get well soon Ashley..

  4. joshua's mummy says:

ouch, looks painful. I was very prone to getting ulcers previously, so I know how poor Ash feels…..dun feel like eating anything at all. Hope she gets well soon

  5. Clairity says:

Wow, that’s a big one. Watermelon powder usually works quite well. Are those drops working?

*sigh* i don’t know if those drops are helping or not because she’s still in pain. Guess it takes a few days to recover? I’ve tried bonjela too 🙁

  6. Adrine says:

Ouch, what a huge ulcer! I get it occasionally so I know how it hurts. Hope she gets well soon. She’s really brave not to resist the meds.

  7. Mummy Gwen says:

Poor Ashley. That’s a painful ulcer..ouch. Get well soon, Ashley. Bonjela works for ulcers too.

  8. Etceteramommy says:

Poor girl. If she can tolerate pain, the best treatment is to rub some salt on. It’s not going to be something she’ll appreciate but it works wonder. Numb the area with ice then apply tiny bit on the ulcer. Alternatively, try gargle salt water? Speedy recovery. I hate those dem ulcers too.

i’ve tried salt on myself last time and it got worse 🙁 the ulcer actually grew bigger 🙁 i’ve been giving her salt water to gargle. she’s better today..thanks 🙂

I know an adult who had Hands, Foot & Mouth disease recently & he said it was the most painful thing ever to have ulcers in your mouth & couldn’t imagine any kid having to go through that kind of ordeal. HFM is also going around town again tho I hardly read about it in the news but I know a few ppl who’ve had it in the last few weeks. Did the Dr do a throat swab? Poor baby Gaga….it’s really painful to have ulcers in your mouth. My best recommendation is salt & gargle with thick salt water or Listerine(or equivalent). Good luck, Barb. Hope she recovers real soon.

nope, the dr. didn’t do a throat swab. maybe she doesn’t think it’s HFM? I checked Ashley’s body and there are no red spots. Been letting her gargle with salt water.

  10. ChloeMummy says:

Oh I remember using this Oral Aid. The sting can be quite unbearable. It’s quite strong even for an adult! Poor Ashley, hope the ulcer clears soon.

yikes…i didn’t know that 🙁 i better stop applying Oral Aid on her 🙁

  11. Macy says:

Sorry to hear that Barb. Hope Chloe gets better soon.

  12. Crystal says:

    Get well soon Ashley!!

  13. anggie says:

  14. yvonne says:

Poor Ashley! But she’s so brave to let you apply the medicine on her ulcer. Hope she get well soon.

  15. Ann says:

  16. Oh dear, it is real pain to have ulcer. Hope you have a speedy recovery, Ashley.

  17. kristie says:

ouch!!! Poor girl…. hopefully all these will GO AWAY SOON!!!!!!!! shooooooooooooooo xoxooxoxoxoxoxoxo sayang dear.

  18. Shirley Loo says:

ohh nooo… the oral aid is very much painful after applied de. I don recomend that…coz Im a very proned to ulcers, i got them like almost every other day.. if ashley are prone too, i shall recomend her to use a special toothpaste tat I’ve been using for years now..its called ‘OMX Probiotics’..it has good bacteria to protect mouth ulcers.. Barb, if u r keen let me know I shall send 1 sample for u..coz its a direct selling product. Also, try go pharmacy to get ‘Orepaste’ for her..its much faster n relieving for the pain..

oh really? i didn’t know 🙁 *sigh* I have Orepaste…I’ll try that today. I’ve heard of OMX Probiotics before…..do you know where I can buy it?

  19. mama bok says:

We have oralgel here.. wished i could send you some now. Poor Ashley – hope she feels better soon. So heartbreaking to see the ulcer so big. 🙁

thanks Jan, we have Oralgel over here too.

  20. sheohyan says:

I really scared of getting ulcer one, as I tend to get one and quite frequent too. I rub it with salt and it is very very painful. I don’t think this method is suitable for Ashley. At least Ashley is willing to let you apply the oral aid, that is very good already. May be you can make her gaggle some salt water. Do it 3 times a day.

  21. mnhl says:

My son is very prone to mouth ulcers too but I never apply anything on it because he refuse to open his mouth for me. Normally, the ulcers will clear off in 1 week time by itself. Hope Ash recover soon.

  22. oh..poor Ashley. but what a brave girl allowing you to apply the medicine for her despite it is so painful as mentioned by some mommies that even adults can’t bear with the pain. Hope that all these ulcers will be cleared very very soon.

    Ashley, stay strong.

  23. Annie Q says:

Ooouch!!! The ulcer quite big ya, poor Ashley, hope she get well soon and back to her Ashley gaga soon!!

  24. Paik Ling says:

Oh poor girl!! Even when I get it, I will be really crabby. Try Daktarin gel. It doesn’t sting the ulcer. If you need something to numb her mouth so that she can eat, I have some Dentinox teething gel which is really effective. Call me if you need it ok?

Thanks for the offer, PL 🙂 She is better now 🙂

  25. So sorry to hear about this. Hope she gets better soon. First thing which comes to mind is HFM but I’m sure the dr knows what he/she’s doing. Hey, I’ve read that it is not advisable to use Bonjela on kids under 16 –> http://www.nhs.uk/news/2009/04April/Pages/BonjelaChildDangerQandA.aspx

  26. Mommy Ling says:

Oh boy..that’s a big ulcer. I bet if we adult having it also cant stand the pain what’s more she’s just a lil girl. Get well soon, Ashley.

  27. jacss says:

ulcer in adult can be intolerable too, what’s more a toddler? but thk god Ashley is cooperative with application of the medication !! u so hard working barb, boil herbal tea 2 times a week….thumbs up 😀

  28. Hope Ashley recover soon. This autoimmune problem possible causes are sleeping late and drinking too much gassy soft drinks.

  29. twin says:

poor ashley .. hope she’s better now.
i dread this when it happens. the poor kid will suffer so much.
i use this oral med called dexaltin … its paste type and doesn’t hurt. if serious, apply twice a day. within 3days it will be gone. sometimes if not serious, it will recover by the next day. its really good.

oh man..i have dexaltin. i bought it last month from the pharmacy because the surrounding of ashley’s upper lip was reddish. i didn’t know it can be used for ulcer 🙁 i should have used this instead of the stinging Oral Aid. Thanks for letting me know.

  30. twin says:

the best thing is .. when u use this paste, even if u drink water it won’t wash off.

  31. health freak says:

OMG!!! The ulcer is super huge and super painful. Glad that she’s better now. Don’t worry, her appetite will surely be better in no time. My kids are always like that too. When they are sick, they eat nothing but when they get better, gosh, they will eat double, as if to compensate all that they’ve not eaten!
