Nine Emperor Gods Festival Celebration In Ipoh

We were back to Ipoh over the weekend to offer prayers at the Tow Boo Kong temple.  It is a yearly affair at this temple during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival.  We haven’t been back to celebrate here for 2 years due to time constraints.  We went to the temple in Ampang and Sungei Way for the past 2 years and let me tell you, it is not the same.  Hubs and I grew up visiting the Tow Boo Kong temple every year and the atmosphere there is so different.  It is lively and best of all are the tortoise buns!  Only the ones sold in Ipoh are edible.

We bought many tortoise buns because we love eating them.  What we normally do is peel of the skin (the colouring part), slice them and dunk them in egg and a bit of sugar. Then we grill the buns.  It is just like french toast.  My hubby takes it a step further by slathering the bun with some bovril.  He and his siblings have been eating them like this since they were kids.

I really miss those buns. Reminds me of my childhood days and how we would look forward to eating them every year 🙂
