So it is the school break this week but we didn’t plan to go anywhere as hubs and I have to work. As we didn’t have to sleep early and wake up early to prepare missy for school, we thought it would be great to catch a movie at night on a weekday. We went to Mid Valley on Monday night to watch The Kid From The Big Apple. I knew I had to watch this movie when I saw the trailer a few months ago. It is such a heartwarming movie about a bratty 11 year old girl from New York who had to move to Malaysia to stay with her conservative grandpa, played by the legendary Ti Lung. Her mother, played by Jessica Hsuan (one of my favourite actresses), had to return to China to work. Therefore, the girl, Sarah (Tan Qin Lin) has to learn to adapt to her life in a different country. I love how the film shows the beauty of a simple childhood, filled with friendships instead of just gadgets.
This movie was shot entirely in Malaysia, mostly at an apartment block in Yulek, Cheras. Now I want to go to Yulek to find this apartment *smile* I must say this humble and unassuming film is the best that I have watched so far. It made me laugh and cry throughout the show and I left the cinema with puffy eyes. It was so heart-tugging and definitely made my heart melt too. Ashley enjoyed it very much and so did my hubby who doesn’t understand Mandarin. Some of the scenes had me in stitches and I must applaud the kids who starred in this movie. They are so good.
The Kid From The Big Apple took home four awards in total for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Writing and Best Newcomers at the recent Macau International Movie Awards.
It is really a must-watch movie so hurry to the cinema now to catch it! Remember, don’t leave your seats after the show has ended. Watch the credits and you will get to see lots of extra scenes from the movie. #thekidfromthebigapple

Hi Barb, thanks for your concern! I’ve been receiving spam messages on FB, that’s why I’ve deleted my account. The girls and I are doing fine. Faith just started school this year..I’ve been busy too.
Thank you for thinking of us…you take care too Barb.
Sounds like a nice movie, but it seems this movie is not showing in Singapore
Barb, my kids went for this movie with their dad without me. I went for my zumba lesson. Luckily I caught up this movie later with my girl friend. I hate myself for not getting the tissues ready. OMG! Please imagine I tore open the tissue packing in the cinema, everyone knew I was crying.
