I am boiling another pot of Luo Han Guo drink today. Hubs is coughing a bit and my throat feels itchy. MIL has been coughing and sniffling too. Since Ashley just recovered from her cough recently, I thought I better boil this drink for everyone at home. The cough virus is going around 🙁 Luo Han Guo is well known for its sweet taste and is part of the Gourd family. It is a medicinal herb for treating cough, sore throat and expel phlegm. Too bad it does not promote weight loss, otherwise, I would drink this every day 😉
I used 2 medium sized Luo Han Guo
About 6 pieces of mut cho (dried dates)
Put everything into a pot and boil for over 2 hours in low heat. I can smell the aroma of the Luo Han Guo now so I guess, my drink is almost ready 🙂 Ashley does not like this drink at all but I force make her drink it.
Loh hon gua can buy from medical shop too?
yes..that’s where i bought them
i dont like the taste of luo hon guo.. never like.. hahaa.. but forced to drink as u mentioned.. 🙂
thanks barb…where can we buy luo han gua ? i’m really jakun la..i only know how to drink the pre-made ones….Aidan is having a cough..thought i make this drink.
err.. sedap apa! i love to drink this.. though i’ve never boil them myself. 🙂
now is my turn to get itchy throat!!! 🙁 Fearles is having bad cough and my hub is also having sore throat. *pengsan*
I think i also have to boil this “leong sui” for everyone to drink.
it’s good. and i don’t think ashley is the only one who doesn’t like this drink – so do I!!! eeekkk…
I think the drink tastes better when u add the dates. I also dun like to drink without the dates…….will boil one of these days…
Maine hates it too… but I love this drink… With or without dates… Hope everyone in the family gets well soon… 🙂
Oh …. we are boiling these too for a few days due to coughing too but we boiled it into soup by putting in some orange skin (chan-pei in Cantonese) and honey dates and some soup bone. Of course I still prefer the sweet version.
BTW, how did you manage to make Ashley take that? We tried to make Angel take that too (and she definitely hates it) and no matter how we coax with some sweets and even lock her in the room, she still refused to drink it 🙁 Your Ashley is really cooperative!!
i tied her up and force her to drink it….heheehehe..just joking. i told her she has to drink it if she wants be strong and healthy. she made a lot of faces though and gave kept saying “Yuck”. It’s easier to get her to drink bitter stuff like meds now that she’s older 🙂
I’ve bought the LHG ages ago but I’ve always thought kena peel the skin, kinda lazy to do that so it’s been sitting in my pantry 😛
Thanks for the recipe Barb, maybe I’ll boil some tomorrow. I love herbal drink!
At least your Ashley drinks, mine would run away shrieking!
hehehe..no need to peel. just break it open 🙂 i used to hate herbal drinks when i was a kid. guess ashley takes after me but now….i force her to drink it. she used to run away and cried too…heheheheh. when your ashley is older, i am sure she’ll hv no problem drinking it.
how how?? how to make her to drink?? I have always been unsuccessful to force anything against my boys’ will. How lah? So much so that i don’t make ‘funny’ things, else I’ll end up eating/drinking the whole lot! hehe…
I usually drink the Luo Hon Gou boiled in soup. Gwen loves it.
for me..I boil it with dried longan and some rock sugar..
i love this drink, but always have it outside, din know its tiz ez to make yeah, thanks barb!
i seldom boil this at home cos the hoosband don’t like the taste. gotto drink when I’m out in the restaurant.
Ohh…I never know Loh Han Guo can cure cough!!! I’m having cough now. Bad weather I guess. I like the taste and MIL used to add in tong gua (winter melon strips) and dried longan.
I like it without the dates coz it’s quite sweet when you put 2 LHG. Did you know that LHG can also treat constipation? If you drink it often enough, you will have real easy bowel movements. In a way, your weight will also go down 🙂
Replying on a blog commonly isnt my thing, but ive spent an hour on the internet site, so thanks for the fantastic infos Greetings.
Yummy,I will cook some when I am free!
