Should you let your kids eat junk food?

Ashley, like all kids, loves eating chips, pops, candies, chocs or snacks like twisties or mamees.  I try to limit them because Ashley has a heaty body.  Somehow, she tends to develop ulcers, etc after consuming chocs or cookies too much eventhough she drinks lots of water after that.  I don’t buy Twisties or chips so Ashley only eats them when given at parties, at other people’s house or when her grandpa secretly gives them to her.  I prefer that she eats ice-creams which she gets to, twice or more a week.  She knows what are junk food and that she’s only allowed to eat them once in a while 🙂   I know I know, some parents may not agree with my parenting style.  They think I am being too strict with her 🙂  We don’t live in a perfect world and there’s junk food everywhere. I am not shielding her  from them.  I just don’t want her to eat too much.  I believe moderation is the key and that she can eat to her hearts content when she’s older because that’s when her immune system is stronger.

Ok enough mumbling for today.  What’s your take on junk food for your kids?

My girl comes home with junk food from school *roll eye* almost every alternate day. I tried to educate her that junk food isn’t healthy. And it isn’t that I disallow her to eat. She can have those (with limitation), provided she finishes her meal and homework / revision.

psst…. something happened and it managed to stop my girl from buying junks from canteen. She is allergic to some colouring / preservative and one day returned home with moustache-like red dots on her upper lip. She was afraid she looked ugly and reluctant to attend school the next day :p

Same here, I also restrict my girls from taking junkfood, but then I still make Sunday or Saturday a titbits day for my girls. I only let them take it after the main meal, and force them down with a big glass of water after having the junkfood. So far they are quite obedient when come to eat junkfood. They will ask me for permission before they eat.

I may be a health freak but yes, I do let Chloe indulge in junkfood once in a while. Everything taken in moderation should be alright. I don’t believe in total banning of food. I always tell Chloe “If you eat a lot of healthy food, you can eat a bit of junkfood”.

For my son Ryan, no junk food esp those titbits, biscuits and fast food. Only once a while, abit of ice cream is fine. Ryan tend to get sore throat easily,so it is best to avoid those junk food.

Me too. I restrict Gwen from taking junk food. She gets to eat those given out from parties or school. I give it to her slowly. She has high tolerance to heaty food..haha. But my girl is very stubborn..she will whine alot requesting for junk food but I do not give in to her whims and fancies.

Like you, I restrict my kids from eating junkfood. But they get to eat them so often from party packs that they get from school. The teachers even reward them with Mamee and lollipops! *roll eyes* We do let the kids eat biscuits, ice cream, chocolate, nuts, and fast food though.

I don’t restrict junk food entirely. Coz if I do that, I know that my kids will be dying to try them, thus they may secretly buy them from school or try ways to get hold of them. I still buy snacks (‘healthier’ junk food hehe) and non-healthy snacks too once in a blue moon and we all feast on them haha.

I don’t restrict them, but don’t let them eat excessively also. But those really junk ones like chewy jelly burger, I’d tell them off. Better eat chips than those junk I’d say. I’m a junkie too hahaha

Monkey loves junk food when we allow him to have it. I agree with you, everything in moderation, and to have a balanced diet.
Do they sell “Bee Propolis” in Malaysia? It is great for mouth sores, and even sore throats. I used it during my treatments last year (little white sores on my tongue due to the chemo drugs), and they were gone the next day.

thanks for the info Macy. yes, there are bee propolis here in malaysia. will keep a look out for it 🙂

There are junk food everywhere and really hard to control. I even found the school canteen is selling junk food! Friends and relative always bring sweets and candies for my girls when they come visit…and I will ‘censor’ and group them into…to give away…safe to eat any time…and ‘ok but not too often’..the last group is keep at the highest point in the kitchen shelf! Snack like Twisty and Mamee are definitely no-no, my girls too get sore throat easily after having them..but, you can’t stop it totally…so, some times I break them into smaller portion.

Moderation is the key. I do let them take but control their intake. They get from party packs most of the time! When my daughter used to be in daycare at her kindy, the teachers were the culprits! But now that she’s not in daycare anymore. She has taken less. Most of the time, I let them snack on those fun packs/school packs cereals like cornflakes, coco crunch or honey stars.

NO JUNK FOOD. Nope. Nada. Junk food not allowed in the household and my kids HATE junkfood.

Only in my fantasies, that is. I have not come across a kid who doesn’t like junkfood. I do try to control their intake of junkfood but the biggest saboteur is my husband.

I believe in moderation too! So I’m changing my eating habits now and I try to eat more fruits now! So hard!

My kids still eats junk food once in a while eventhough they are in their teens. My hubby too is another junk food lover. So I have to boil more barley or soup!
