When I was a little, I used to watch my grandmother make bee koh for the Jade Emperor Festival. She made them every year for the celebration and I looked forward to eating the delicious Nyonya glutinous rice cake. It is one of my favourites. My grandma’s bee koh was the best. Every time I come across this rice cake, memories of my beloved grandmother come flooding back.
During the recent Chinese New Year, I couldn’t find any bee koh for sale so we went ahead with the Jade Emperor celebration without it. A few weeks ago, I got a surprise when I came home from work. Placed nicely on the table, was a big piece of bee koh.
My dear mother-in-law who knows how much I love bee koh, decided to make one for me. Ain’t that sweet? She was already busy packing for her return to Toronto in a few days’ time and yet she took the time to make me a bee koh. I am grateful for her thoughtfulness. When I took a bite of the rice cake, I was so happy because it tasted just like how my dear grandma used to make it.
*We don’t remember the days, but we remember the moments*
I like bee koh too. My late mom used to make this too. So thoughtful of your MIL to make for you.
