Designer Paper Bags

I read an interesting article in the newspaper yesterday.  It is about designer paper bags in fashion-conscious Japan.  The article revealed that some Japanese girls like to carry paper bags belonging to designer brands.  They would keep their purse, gym clothes, plastic canister, lunch box and more in the bag and carry it around.  Some even use a special brand bag for special occasion.

This sure brings back memories of my teenage years.  I used to cringe when my mom handed me the pink  or white plastic bags.  I didn’t want to be caught carrying it.  How uncool.

The ugly plastic bag

Back then there were no brands like Esprit, Gap or Benetton in Ipoh.  So carrying the shopping bags of boutiques or well-known shoe shops were considered cool 🙂  That’s what I thought anyway.  I remember going to Singapore and shopped at Esprit.  When they gave me their plastic shopping bag, I treated it like gold.  I also used their shopping bag to put my stuff and go shopping with it.  Crazy huh?  However, I won’t iron the bag after each outing like the girl mentioned in the article …..hehehehehe.  Too bad I don’t know what happened to the Esprit plastic bag now.  What about you?  Did you do the same when you were younger?

I like those hard paper shopping bags but I’d never use them in public. Any bags or t-shirts or whatever with the company names printed on them are a big no-no for me. I don’t like to be a free walking advertisement LOL.

  3. you know what ? hub keeps loads of them. when I first met him, he had a whole cupboard full of designer paper bags. We’ll use them for CNY ‘pai nien’.. aussino ones are nice, I like the cheerful color and size.
The best is still the ‘bak kwa’ ones..hardy and never goes out of shape. I use it to fill plastic bag of guppy fish when anyone wants to bring some home (I have plenty of guppies), I place them in a small white bag (the ugly ones like your photo) and place the white bag into the bak kwa bag. Hang to any hook in the car,, it won’t fall or leak. Steady huh ?

I still keep some of the big paperbags nowadays because the really big ones are great when nak transport stuff to my parents’ or inlaws’. Haha! But nolah, I won’t use them for shopping.
