We took a short trip to Pomelosville for this….
These are the cute pink tortoise buns from the Tow Boo Keong Temple in Ipoh. They are only available once a year which is during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival (Kow Wong Yeh). It’s a yearly affair for us to go back and pray at the Tow Boo Keong Temple. The festival is celebrated over the first nine days of the ninth moon in the Chinese lunar calendar.
They even come in yellow 🙂 There are some really huge tortoise buns about ten times the size of these little ones which are specially for praying and Ashley kept asking us to buy one. She went on and on about it and luckily we managed to divert her attention to something else. We chose a few pink tortoise buns and handed her one. She said that’s her pet and we cannot eat it 🙂 As usual, one night stay in Pomelosville is not enough because we couldn’t get to eat everything we like. We did however eat something which we haven’t eaten for many, many years. Will share it in my next post 🙂 Oh, before we left, we went to the famous grubby coffeeshop for our ice white coffee.

As usual, we bought a lot of our favourite Sar Kok Liew, Ipoh’s signature stuffed turnip which is normally eaten with noodles.
They are Ashley’s favourite too. This girl definitely has inherited her parent’s foodie genes….hehehehhe
Oh we called it ‘miku’, usually I’ll spread some butter/kaya in between or just eat on its own! hehe..

Wow, you actually took a trip home for this? With a tight schedule, I just went to the Ampang Tow Boo Keong Temple in KL. This is the second time for me there.
I think I still preferred Ipoh’s Tow Boo Keong. Somehow, the atmosphere is a bit different. The latter is more orderly and the crowd less pushy. Vegetarian food cheaper and the praying paraphenalias less costly too.
Here in KL, it is like going to war, even at the temple. Only consolations, I got to take some pictures and videos. Also got to witness the lighting up of the 9 lamps ceremony which is believed to be auspicious.
Oh, I missed Ipoh’s sar kok liew and ‘chu gan yuen’- pork tendon balls with lots of ginger! Feel like asking your girl for a bite!!

I missed this event since my father passed away 3 years back… normally he will bring us to Ampang’s Kow Wong Yeh every year!

May I know where exactly to get the stuffed turnip? My SIL always gets me the salted chicken but the stuffed turnip looks good!

By looking at the sar kok liew’s photo I know it’s good stuff. 😀 Gwen sure goes gaga over those turtle buns…so cute.
