My Husky The Destroyer

We went through the same phase with Buffy and Cooper when they first came home.  Yes, the phase where they destroyed many pairs of sandals, shoes, pails, pots and more.  Now Sheldon is the destroyer.  He has bitten shoes and sandals, pails and plants. Every morning, there is something on the floor at the porch.  We would see bits and pieces of the sandals he has bitten.  He started off with hub’s sandals. I thought he wasn’t interested in mine but I was wrong.

What is it with the chewing and biting?  Boredom?  He is not teething that’s for sure.  We have chewy toys for him but he is not interested.  As he chews them late at night when we are asleep, we cannot stop him from doing it right there and then.  Come morning when I see it, I would tell him No. I guess he doesn’t understand why he cannot chew the sandals.  Cooper has grown out of this phase so hopefully Sheldon will be out of it soon.

Slippers in tatters.

See his look? Still nonchalant to what has happened.

Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) K-Drama Season 2

One of the K-dramas that I am currently watching right now is Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) Season 2.  Yes, I watch 2 dramas at the same time because the episodes are only released weekly (on Saturday and Sunday). Right now they have released up to Episode 10 and the final episode is 16.  On other days, I watch Hospital Playlist Season 1.

Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) is a drama about three women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who have marital troubles due to the husbands’ infidelities. The first season was divided into two parts, with the first part showing the breakdown of the three central marriages in the show and the second part showing how the husbands’ extramarital affairs began with younger women.

Honestly, Season 1 was kind of slow moving but come Season 2, the drama is so good that I look forward to the weekends when they release the new episodes.  On top of the good plot, I also love the fashion in this k-drama.  I love to see the fashion on Lee Ga-Ryeong who plays the radio DJ in her 30’s and Park Joo-Mi who plays the radio program director in her 40’s.   They often wear clothes and accessories from designers like Dior, Hermes, Chanel, Fendi and more.  Also featured are clothes from & Other Stories as well.

While watching Episode 10, I spotted Joo-Mi wearing a lovely pair of earrings.  According to K-drama Fashion, the earrings are actually from Boucheron. It caught my eye because I had purchased a similar looking earrings too but of course, they are not Boucheron.

This image is from K Drama Fashion

This is my earrings which I have not worn yet.  Ok, so the only similarity are the green shade and also both the earrings are single stud and feature a detachable drop design.

I know, I have too much time in my hands *chuckle*.  If you love fashion and love K-dramas, remember to watch Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) Season 1 and Season 2.

The Environmental Impact of the Sneaker Industry

Person Wearing Black Sneakers Sitting in Mountain

(Image: https://www.pexels.com/photo/person-wearing-black-sneakers-sitting-in-mountain-91223/)

When most people look at a pair of skate shoes, they give little thought to the impact on the environment. What is going unnoticed is the fact that there is a lot of pollution and other environmental problems in the industry behind the shoes most consumers wear.

What people need to realize is that it is not the few pairs of shoes they own. The footwear industry is massive. It is estimated that more than 20 billion pairs of shoes are manufactured every year. When you consider the industry at that scale, the problems can be devastating for the environment.

So what is the environmental toll of the shoes we wear? Read on to learn more about the environmental impact of the sneaker industry.

Pollution

Most people have no idea what a sneaker factory looks like or the processes that go into making a pair of sneakers. Most sneakers are made in giant factories that use large machines and an assortment of chemicals to produce the shoes that end up on store shelves.

Most athletic shoes are not just stitched together. Shoe factories often use an array of chemical adhesives to hold different parts of the shoe together. Beyond that, you might find tanning chemicals, dyes and preservatives used in the manufacturing process.

Even when the chemical waste is hauled to a waste facility, it can still contaminate the environment. However, many sneaker factories operate in countries with lax regulation and enforcement. It is not unheard of for these factories to wash chemicals down drains or to dump them in ways that are not good for the environment. This not only contaminates the local ecosystem, it can be harmful to wildlife.

You also have to consider the production of the materials. Most sneakers are made from plastic or some other type of synthetic textile. This includes materials like polyester, vinyl and thermoplastic polyurethane. While these materials are great for durability, their production is bad for the environment.

Carbon Footprint

The sneaker industry is also having a significant impact on climate change. While automobiles and air travel may have a larger carbon footprint, one study found that the average pair of sneakers generates about 30 pounds of CO2 emissions. About two-thirds of this figure comes from the manufacturing process.

As was mentioned earlier, sneakers are made in large factories that use machinery. Keeping these factories running requires a lot of energy. Since much of the world’s electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, this has a significant impact on climate change. You also have to consider the fact that in many of the countries where most shoes are produced, they use less green energy and more fuels like petroleum and coal.

Many popular sneaker brands have a large carbon footprint before the manufacturing process. With so many shoes being made from different types of plastic, you have to consider the carbon footprint of the plastic. Producing plastics is incredibly energy-intensive. While it does cover more than just the materials in shoes, it is estimated that, from production to incineration, plastics produce about 56 gigatons of carbon emissions.

Once the shoes are made, you have to account for transportation. Most of the big shoe companies manufacture their shoes far from the consumer to take advantage of cheap labor. The shoes then have to be put on boats, planes, trains or trucks to reach the market where they are to be sold. This adds another layer of carbon emissions to the shoes you find at your local retail store.

Disposal

The problem is not over once you are done with a pair of shoes. What did you do with your last pair of old sneakers? Were you able to recycle them or did you put them in the trash? The reality is that most worn-out shoes end up in a landfill.

The first problem is that this leads to billions of pairs of old shoes taking up space in landfills. However, the problem is compounded when you consider how long some of these materials last. Plastics are used in shoes because they are durable. In landfills, this durability can lead to an item that will be there for hundreds or even thousands of years. Worse yet, as plastics degrade, they release chemicals into the environment.

Trying to recycle old shoes might seem like a good solution, but it is not as simple as it may seem. Most plastics are not easy to recycle. Along with that, sneakers are usually made from a variety of materials, so it makes them difficult to recycle.

What the Big Brands are Doing

Many of the big brands are aware of the problem and some are making efforts to create sustainable sneakers. With that said, many of these efforts are more of a gesture than an attempt to do anything significant.

One example is Nike’s reuse a shoe program. Under this program, Nike accepts old athletic shoes and finds ways to recycle or reuse the materials. While this program does have some impact, not all of the materials can be reused or recycled. Additionally, it just extends the life of a product that is already bad for the environment.

Many shoe brands are also trying to move away from using fossil fuels to power their factories. This means switching to sources like solar and wind power to reduce the carbon footprint of shoe manufacturing. This is another good step forward, but there is still a long way to go.

Conclusion

We all wear shoes and we should push for a footwear industry that is good to the planet. As consumers, we can shop with brands that promise to use sustainable materials and take steps to reduce their carbon footprint. Furthermore, we should try to get more from every pair of shoes we buy. You don’t have to throw a pair of shoes away just because they are a little scuffed or some of the stitching comes undone. You can repair and restore old shoes to get more miles out of them.

While buying eco-friendly sneakers and taking steps to get more from every pair is a good start, we can’t rely on individual action alone. We need the major shoe brands to make significant changes. Consumers should support brands that are ethical while also keeping pressure on the big brands that contribute the most to these problems.

Blessed Food From Ipoh

It has been more than 9 months since I went back to my hometown, Ipoh because of the closing of the interstate borders.  I really miss going back just to walk around, see my relatives and eat the delicious food that Ipoh is famous for.  Some time last week, I saw a video on the famous Onn Kee Beansprout Chicken.  The video interviewed the owner of Onn Kee shop and also featured their famous blanched chicken, beansprouts and noodle.  I miss eating Ipoh beansprouts because they are fat and crunchy, unlike the ones here.  A couple of days later, I contacted my friend whom I buy kimchi from and she told me she is selling some food from Ipoh and beansprouts were one of them.  So she promptly brought 1 kilo of beansprout for me the next day.

The juicy beansprouts from Ipoh.  I washed them and removed the heads and roots. Not a fan of washing and cleaning beansprouts but no pain no gain!

Here is my plate of beansprouts which I blanched and poured in garlic oil and oyster sauce.  It was a satisfying meal.

Then a few days later my sister who runs a business in Ipoh made her way back to KL for her vaccination.  She is allowed to cross the interstate because of her vaccination. When she asked me what I wanted from Ipoh, the first thing that came to mind is my favourite sar kot liew (fried stuffed turnip / jicama).  They were from the famous Big Tree Foot (Dai Shu Geok) stall in in Pasir Puteh.  These crunchy and delectable yong liew are only famous in Ipoh and mostly all the fish ball noodle stall should have.  They are basically yambean or jicama that have been diced and mixed with fish paste to create the filling.  The filling is placed on a piece of beancurd sheet and rolled into thick roll and then fried.  The sar kot liew is soft and warm in the center and the outer layer is crispy.

My precious 30 pieces of sar kot liew which we finished in 2 days.  Bliss!  My cravings have been satisfied.

How I Get Ready To Go Out

With the lockdown in place, I only go out of my house to exercise or to do my groceries.  I usually do my groceries twice a week from the market in my neighbourhood.  Before I head out, I have to get ready all the necessary things like sanitizer, face mask and face shield.  Also before I put on my face mask, I would spray my throat with Betadine, a throat spray.  According to this article – https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/singapore-study-throat-spray-effective-reducing-spread-covid19-infection, throat sprays that contain povidone-iodine or the oral drug hydroxychloroquine is effective to reduce the risk of Covid infection.  It is good to use this spray if you are going out to a place where there are many people around.

These are the things I need to put on before going out in this new normal.  Here is something funny that happened to me a few days ago.  I put the throat spray next to the hand sanitizer and when I wanted to spray my throat, I grabbed the sanitizer instead without look at the bottle.  Thank God I realized before I swallowed the liquid.  I quickly ran to the bathroom and gargled my mouth.  Phew!  I have to be extra careful with these things.

Online Shopping During Lockdown

This latest MCO, or “total lockdown”, was implemented on June 1 in Malaysia, after the daily new Covid-19 cases soared past the 7,000 cases mark in late May.  It was extended to another two weeks from June 15th to June 28th.   Today is already Day 27th into FMCO and the government has just announced that the lockdown is to continue until the daily cases goes down to 4000.  Just don’t see an end to this predicament that we are in.  This is so frustrating.

Since the start of the lockdown, I have been shopping online for some necessities because I do not want to go out to the supermarket if I can.  My favourite shopping platforms are Shopee and Lazada.  I have been getting some good deals on these platforms especially when there is no delivery charges involved.  It is good to check the shopping platforms regularly for Free Shipping vouchers daily if you intend to shop online.

Last week, when I wanted to look for Dettol Disinfectant Spray, I saw these 2 new scents and they are Lemon and Lavender. I have been buying the Sea Breeze scent so these 2 new ones are a good change.  I am glad to get a good price of RM20.99 each and delivery is free using the Shopee voucher.

The week before, I managed to buy 4 ply KF94 face masks and 5-ply KN95 face masks from Shopee as well.  They are cheap too, so unlike last year when we had to pay close to RM90 for a box of 50 surgical face masks.

I have also bought some Lotte Luncheon Meat online as well as Dog food and treats.  Shopping is the best therapy!

Sea Salt Sunflower Seeds As Snack While Doing Netflix Marathon

I love munching on sunflower seeds or kuaci when I am watching K-dramas or movies.  I am so glad to discover this new sunflower seed flavour by ChaCheer.  It is the Sea Salt flavour (Garam Laut).  I bought it out of curiosity one day from a shop nearby.

I forgot about it until a week later and when I opened the pack, I thought they have gone moldy.  So when I check the date, it has not expired yet.  I took one piece and opened it and everything looks fine.  Then it occurred to me that those white flaky stuff on the sunflower seeds are salt!

They do look unappetizing eh?  Well trust me, you won’t be able to stop eating once you have tried them.  Alas, the shop that I bought them has run out of stock.  I managed to find them on Shopee though and ordered 4 packets.  I can eat till my heart’s content.
