Charcoal Bread From Sbread

When I was at Mid Valley over the weekend, I couldn’t resist the charcoal bread from Sbread. Have you seen them before?  Weird and mouldy-looking eh?  I have read about them before in the newspaper.  Here is an excerpt of it from NST.

The edible charcoal is made from the Moso bamboo which is naturally black in colour. It’s first carbonised over high heat, then ground into powder before mixed into the bread dough with sunflower seeds. They claim it can prevent cancer. This isn’t a strange concept, having originated from Japan and now a popular health food in South Korea and Taiwan.

This edible charcoal powder, also known as The Amazing Black Diamond, has been used in soba noodles. It’s also used to purify water and to brush teeth with, as it is rich in natural minerals, lowers the body’s acidity levels, improves blood circulation and has cleansing properties.

Pretty interesting and since it’s healthy, I thought I would try some.  My hubs doesn’t want to eat black bread so I know I won’t be able to finish a whole loaf.  Therefore I got half a loaf which cost RM4.50 😉

My half loaf of Charcoal Bread

Well, it tastes like a normal bread to me and definitely no charcoal taste at all 😀  Sbread has a variety of jams to go with their breads such as Vanilla Kaya, Chocolate and Special Chilli Paste & Shredded Floss.  However, I didn’t get any.  Instead I got myself a tub of Olive Gold spread.  Shireen blogged about this spread before and it looked healthy as well as delicious. So when I saw it one day at the supermarket, I decided to get a tub.

It is a pretty good spread and goes well with the Charcoal Bread.  Oh, Ashley doesn’t want to eat the black bread though.  I think she finds it weird 😀

Flash Cards

When Ashley was a few months old, I started to flash cards to her once a day.  Kinda kiasu lah as I want to help my child to learn faster 😉  I was using the cards below and only showed her the picture part.  I would read out loud to her while holding the cards.

I was really surprised that at an early age (I forgot how old Ashley was. Should have recorded it down), Ashley knew which card to pick out when I asked her.  At the age of 2, she knows her ABCs, 1 to 10 as well as the different shapes.  I stopped using the flash cards after that and only in December last year, I took them out again.  This time, I use the Words flash cards below to help her learn the words and spelling too.

I also use different fonts so that she is used to seeing them.  I started her with 3-letter words first and then added some 2-letter ones and single alphabet words. I’m happy that she could recognize the words and also spell them without looking at the cards 😀

Now, I am trying to teach her how to read by using a few cards like below. Got to find more cards to string a longer sentence 😀

Last week, I showed her this 5-letter word and I am glad that she knows how to spell it without looking at the card  😀  I believe Flash cards are really useful and great learning tool.

Pizzas For Valentine’s Dinner ;)

From the title of this post, you can guess already what we had earlier tonight 😉  Recently, a new eatery has opened in our neighbourhood.  It’s called Pinos and has a tagline – “Bringing Italy to You!”.  Yes, it is all about Italian food – PIZZA.  I heard that the owner/chef is Italian and so are some of his staff.  They take turns to whip up the pizzas which are simply marvellous.  They are using a coffeeshop for their pizza business.  By day, this coffeeshop sells “chap fan😀  If you are familiar with Steven’s Corner, then looking for this coffeeshop is real easy because they are on the same row.

This is how the shop looks like at night. You can never miss the big posters with Italian flag colours.

Our plate of Special Pizza which comes with seafood and chicken ham. Mmmmmmm…delicious!!

Chicken Calzone stuffed with oysters and lots of cheese.  Yummy!!

I wanted to snap a pic of the chef making the pizza but was afraid that he doesn’t like it.  Maybe next time 🙂 We find that their food is really out of this world and it is not something you would find at the normal Italian restaurant. One bite and I can feel myself drifting into paradise 😀 Yes, the food is that good!  Dining at Pinos is more like a mamak stall atmosphere 🙂  Since today is Valentine’s Day, we treat this as our Valentine’s dinner under the moon & stars.  We sat outside the shop, just like a mamak place 🙂  They are open from 7pm to 1am.  I almost forgot – The price of our meal – rm32.  Cheap?

after almost a week

of being unwell, cranky and not in the mood, Ashley finally started to sing again this morning.  She even talked non-stop on our way back from the paed.  Yeah, took her to see the paed again because there is still a lot of phlegm in her throat and she was coughing a lot at night.  Due to the high fever, huge ulcer on her lip, cough & cold, she had lost some weight 🙁  Oh well, I am really glad that she is well again.  Can always fatten her up later 😉  I also kept Ashley away from school this whole week.  She wanted to go to school this morning but since it’s Friday, I decided to let her rest one more day.

one after another …..

Ashley does not have a temperature today but guess what? She developed cough and runny nose instead. *sigh*  Must be the weather these days.  I have been giving her lots of Millenium juice these few days and my mom also boiled the “ling yeong sai kok” for her, 2 days in a row to bring down the body heat. Hubs has a slight fever and is coughing too.  My throat is feeling scratchy too.  Looks like everyone at home has been bitten by the sick bug 🙁  Sorry if I don’t visit your blog these few days.  Got to take care of Ashley and also rest a bit.

Falling asleep on the couch after she took some medication just now

Meeting Up With Another Fellow Blogger :)

This morning, we met up with this very nice mommy blogger and her family.  I’m sure you all know her and her cute daughters 😉  She is none other than Vivien of Cheeks to Cheeks.

Belle enjoying her ‘lor mai kai’

Vien and her family came back to Msia for a vacation.  I have been wanting to meet Belle every since I started reading her mommy’s blog 2 years ago.  Now, not only do I get to meet Belle, I also got to meet her little sis, cutie Cassie too.  Both the girls are so adorable.  We had brunch at the coffeeshop near my house which is also near Vien’s grandmother’s shop.  Though Ashley still has a slight fever, I still brought her along to meet Vien because I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to meet up with them….hehehehehe.  Ashley was very happy to meet the two “mei meis”.  She kept touching Belle and followed her around.  However, she showed her jealous streak later and didn’t want to let Belle take the gift bag which I gave her *rolls eyes*

Belle giving me the ‘princess’ smile after she had applied some lipstick. Ain’t she pretty?

Managed to snap a photo of the 2 girls together. They weren’t very keen with taking photos together. Guess they haven’t warmed up yet 😀

After our brunch, we proceeded to Vien’s grandma’s shop which is just a few doors away. The girls walking hand-hand 🙂

Cassie was at the shop with her gong-gong and poh-poh. She was sitting on gong-gong’s lap, drinking vitagen. Look at those big eyes.

Ashley and Belle sharing a chair after warming up to each other in the shop.

I only realised it after I downloaded all the photos that I did not take a photo together with Vien and the girls *slaps forehead*  It was pretty stuffy and noisy at the coffeeshop, and we couldn’t wait to leave after finishing our food 🙂   It was great to finally meet Vien, Jon, Belle & Cassie. Hopefully, next time we’ll fly over to the US to meet them 😉

Unwell

Ashley had high fever earlier this morning around 6am.  Her temperature was 39.1 deg. Celscius.  I put a suppository for her (after much struggling and crying).  Poor baby.  The fever went away shortly after.  I brought her to the paed at 11.30am as that’s the time the clinic opens.  She was fine and active all morning.  Her paed said her throat is red.  Gave me a bottle of fever meds, meds throat enzyme, cough and cold.  She also gave me a bottle of antibiotic to stand by since it’s the long weekend.  Ashley’s fever came back around 1pm and I fed her the oral meds.  When I checked her temperature, it was 39.2.  Just 30 mins ago at the doctor’s, her temp was 37.5.  I got a shock and quickly sponged her.  She didn’t nap for long either, kept tossing and turning in bed.  *Sigh*  Hope her fever will go away soon.

Now Where Did She Learn That From?

This is a backdated post.  Just before the CNY, Ashley caught the cold bug.  So she had to some medication for her runny nose.  Once when I was feeding her the medication, she wouldn’t stand still.  Hence, the meds spilled onto the floor.  I was annoyed and told her sternly, “Ashley, stand still when I am feeding you the medication“.  This was her reply – “If you say so” in a sassy manner O_O

My Friend’s New House

During our recent trip back to Ipoh, I took the opportunity to meet up with some of my good friends.  The meeting took place at one of my friend’s new house.  She and her family just moved into her home a month ago.  As soon as I reached her house, she gave me a tour.  It was such a beautiful house and it comes with a swimming pool.  There are 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 kitchens (a wet and a dry) as well as an entertainment room which come complete with a huge tv and home theater furniture.  Simply awesome!  The house was also tastefully decorated and adopt a minimalist look.  Ashley was so mesmerised by the swimming pool that she wanted to jump into it.  Well, I think the next time when we visit my friend, we will bring Ashley’s swimsuit along.
