Enjoying My Me Time

I love spending time alone by myself and I find it pretty empowering. I can enjoy my own company and focus on my own thoughts. I do enjoy eating at a restaurant by myself, going shopping by myself and also watching a movie alone. I get to walk into a store and spend time browsing without distractions or having to worry about boring the other party and etc.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to a nearby mall and watched The White Storm 3. It starred some of my favorite actors such as Louis Koo, Sean Lau and Aaron Kwok. It was a pretty good show. After watching the movie, I went shopping. It was an enjoyable outing for me.

There is nothing like spending some time alone to recharge. “Alone time feeds the soul like nothing else can“.

Having my cappuccino before the movie starts.

Ming Yue Mooncakes From Ipoh

The famous Ming Yue mooncakes from the old school confectionery in Pasir Pinji, Ipoh are known for their traditional and delicious taste. The mooncakes are freshly bake daily and are also one of the cheapest in town. Their famous ones are the assorted nuts filling (Ng Ngan) and assorted nuts filling with Chinese ham (Kam Tui).  There is often a long queue at Ming Yue Confectionery for their peanut brittle cookies that are available all year round. Come Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival, there will be long line of customers waiting outside their shop. The line can start from one end of the block to their doorstep.

Recently, my youngest sister gave us a box of this exclusive mooncake which she asked my other sister to get from Ipoh. There was no long queue when my sister dropped by to buy 16 boxes for friends and relatives. Thank God there was no limit imposed when she was there.

The no frills mooncake box

The square ones are the mixed nuts and the other two are lotus paste with egg yolk and kuaci and one is without egg yolk. Sadly, no keto mooncakes for me. I could only look at them.

Mabuhay Laguna Restaurant Authentic Philippine Cuisine In Kuala Lumpur

We went to Petaling Street again recently to look around.  Brought my brother in law to visit RexKL which was formerly a cinema as he wanted to look at how the old cinema was back in the days. While walking around Petaling Street looking for food, we stumbled upon a quaint restaurant that serves Filipino and Balinese cuisines. Mabuhay Laguna looks like a home based eatery. It is quite narrow and has about 10 tables.

Besides Philippine specialties, this restaurant serves many pork dishes that come with rice, pork knuckles, chicken, seafood, steak, local delights and many more. I ordered a plate of mixed pork platter (Babi Guling) without any rice. It consists of fried pork rinds, crackling pork that tasted like siew yoke and flavourful pork slices that are to be eaten with the sauces. I think one of them is sambal and it was really spicy!

Ashley did not order anything as she was rather full from eating a snack earlier and my brother-in-law had a bowl of clay pot noodle besides RexKL before we stumbled upon this restaurant. So, I was the only one eating there and could not order other dishes to try that day. If you are in KL and would like to look up this restaurant, here is the address:-

Mabuhay Laguna

Address: 64, Jalan Hang Lekiu,
50100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
Hour: Closes 9 pm
Phone number : 011-1910 1661

The Naughty One Strikes Again

Yesterday I washed a bathroom mat and left it to dry on top of a table at the porch. I placed the mat in the middle of the table so that it was not jutting out. Then I totally forgot about it and we went out.

We came home at 10pm and I saw the mat on the floor. I knew that someone has pulled it down and I was hoping that the mat remained the same although it is dirty and I would have to wash it again.  Once I opened the mat up, I saw this.

See the right bottom corner? A chunk was bitten off.

So who did it?

Who else but this naughty one?

See the black line on his face? We don’t know where he went snooping around earlier and got this line imprinted on his face. You can tell how naughty this fella is. Sheldon is always up to mischief. He cannot sit still at all. Whenever anyone comes to our home, he would climb up on the railing on the sliding door and look at us from there because that is where he can see the living room clearly. When anyone comes to the gate to talk to us, he would be the first to go out to there and sit down, and listen to our conversation.

A Much-Needed Trip Out Of Town With Friends

Last Friday, my friends and I went up to the hill for a one day trip. The last time we planned an outing together was in 2019, before Covid came and changed everyone’s lives. We have been planning a trip out of town for the longest time but it didn’t materialize because it’s not easy to accommodate our busy schedule. This trip to Genting Highlands was planned like 2 months ago and luckily all of us made it!

We all met in E’s house in the morning after beating some pretty heavy morning ‘going-to-work’ traffic. We left her house at about 9am with PL behind the wheel and reached Genting Premium Outlet at about 10. I sat at the back with 2 other ladies and felt a bit wuzzy during the drive up. Usually I sat in front when hubs drove and I was fine. Luckily all was fine after I inhaled my trusted Peppermint Field inhaler. Sound very ‘ahjumma’ right?

We took the cable car up to Genting which is a better and safer option than driving up.  We stopped at the Chin Swee Temple and had fun taking group photos. It was windy and cooling with lots of mist at that time. Next, we adjourned to Genting for early lunch at Beauty In A Pot.

It was really nice having hotpot in the cool weather. Lunch was a sumptuous affair and we ordered a Pork Bone Collagen soup and Tomato soup. We chatted, laughed and filled our tummy at Beauty In A Pot. PL surprised everyone by treating us to this delicious lunch. We almost had to roll ourselves out of the restaurant because we were so full!

Next, we all went into the casino (a first time for some of us) and tried out hands on 2 games. 4 of us lost and 1 won. It was a good experience to go in and have a look but I don’t like the vibe in there. It felt dark although there were lights everywhere and I could smell cigarette smoke because smokers are allowed to smoke in the casino at a corner.

We had to walk through the Genting mall to get into the casino and I also didn’t like the atmosphere there. It was crowded, the whole place looked dark and there was an uneasy feeling. So glad we got out and took the cable car back to GPO for some shopping. We had about an hour to look around and we all split up to shop. I got a top for Ashley and a pair of slippers for myself at Cotton On.

All of us planned to go home after dinner so we headed down to Genting Permai Avenue and had an early snack/dinner at Brew House. We sat outside to enjoy the breeze. Here is a photo taken of the 5 of us. It was hilarious trying out different poses we saw on TikTok. Luckily the staff at The Brew House were very accommodating and patient with us ahjummas.

We all arrived home at around 9pm that day and were knackered from this fun-filled one day trip that gave us a chance to connect and heal our souls.

Caring Friends Are Hard To Find

So yesterday my friends and I met up for dinner at Thai In, a new Thai Mookata place along Old Klang Road. We haven’t met each other for a while so we decided to have dinner last night. We have been making plans to meet up but all of us are usually busy with family or work so we have been rescheduling our meetup for months.

Our delicious hotpot with msg-laden soup. It was good to eat and chat at the same time and we didn’t realize how much msg was in the soup till we got home and got very thirsty.

It was great to meet them and as usual we chatted and laughed a lot. One of them bought everyone some bread and because I am on low carb/keto, she specifically ordered Keto bread and a keto brownie for me. I am so touched!

This is my keto nut bread from PL.

A clearer pic of the keto bread from 88Keto

I forgot to take a pic of the brownie and it was so delicious! It was good to have some keto cakes once in a while. So blessed to have this bunch of friends in my life. We text each other in our group chat daily and talk about families, work and everything in between. We cheer each other up when anyone of us is down, lend a listening ear when one of us wants to rant and just be there for one another. Very glad to have these women in my life!

Cauli Rice @ Paradigm Mall

Some time last week, missy was telling me about this new eatery known as Cauli & Rice that has several outlets in KL. She read about it online and she knows that I love to eat cauli fried rice. I was in Paradigm mall last Saturday and luckily I remembered that there is a Cauli Rice outlet there.

Cauli & Rice has many different variations of cauliflower rice such as Spicy Tom Yum, Garlic Protein Bowl, Malaysian Curry Bowl, Tangy Tomato Bowl, Nasi Lemak Cauli Bowl, Umami Mushroom, Spicy Belacan and Kurma Cauli Bowl. Each bowl comes with cauliflowers instead of rice but you can also opt to have your bowl with regular white rice or Hybrid (half white rice and half cauliflower rice).

They also have other side dishes like fried chicken drummets and wings in different flavors as well as cauli nuggets in spicy soy or soy garlic flavour. Also available are cauli fries, sweet potato fries and regular fries.

I ordered the Nasi Lemak Cauli Bowl that is served with 2 pieces of fried chicken drumstick, boiled kampung egg, pickled veges, ikan bilis (anchovies) and cauliflowers as rice with a dollop of delicious sambal.  The fried drumsticks are crispy and fried just right. I love the texture of the cauli rice and when eaten together with sambal, it does taste very close to Nasi lemak. The pickled vege were crunchy and delicious. It was indeed a satisfying meal for me.

Too bad that I missed out the Cauli nuggets. Luckily I can order Cauli & Rice from Grab and with GrabUnlimited, I get RM10 off for a minimum order of RM25. I am going to order myself some caulirice one of these days.

If you want to eat healthy, check out Cauli & Rice at the following outlets:-

  1. Paradigm Mall
  2. Da Men Mall
  3. Intermark
  4. Gamuda Walk Mall

The Best K Drama That I Have Just Watched Recently

I am a huge fan of Kdramas and I have blogged about how I started Kdrama here. Ever since I started watching the first Korean movie – Parasite and the first K-drama – Crash Landing On You, I have never looked back. I just can’t get enough of them. There is just something about the Korean dramas that got me addicted. Besides the good-looking casts, the unique story lines and unexpected plot lines with brilliant twists always make the drama interesting.  I am not a fan of period dramas or fantasy dramas but surprisingly I enjoy watching these 2 genres of Kdramas.

Let’s not get started on the Korean food. It is always a delight to see the Koreans enjoying their food with lots of banchan. They make me crave for the kimchi jiggae and fried chicken.  I even bought a gold Korean pot and earthenware!

I have just finshed watching Season 2 of Missing – The Other Side. This drama is so good and heart-tugging. I have never cried so much watching a K-drama until this. It is about a village where missing deceased people stay because their bodies cannot be found. A group of people will try to find the missing body and chase after the truth behind their deaths. I watched Season 1 last year didn’t know there is a Season 2. Now, I can’t wait for Season 3 to come.

My Daughter, The Animal Lover

Missy is missing her 2 dogs very much now that she is staying in the dorm and only comes home on weekends.  To ease her homesickness, she has been going around feeding the cats in the campus. Yes, there are many cats all over the campus and one stray dog. Missy has been buying cat food and feeding the cats whenever she sees them. She also bought a packet of dog treats and keep in her bag all the time so that when she spots the dog while walking around campus, she will feed her.

There are 2 cats that always hang around her dormitory. One is an orange cat named Rachel and the other one is a black/white cat. One day, after feeding the black/white cat, it followed her back to the dorm and guess what? The cat knows where she stays now. So one evening, missy heard some meowing outside her door and when she opened it, she saw the cat sitting there staring at her. Yup, the cat climbed up 3 stories to look for her. She told me that she didn’t have anymore food so she just patted the feline and off it went away. I reminded her not to bring the cat into her dorm as it is against the dorm regulation and she can get fined.

We sent her back to the campus last weekend and she spotted Rachel under the car. She wasted no time to call out to it and carried it. As you can see, Rachel didn’t look too happy about it. Missy has always wanted to have a cat as a pet but I said no because we already have 2 rascals at home. Don’t think they will be happy having a cat around.
